Here’s a footnote to Monday’s post on Ben Shapiro’s attempts to discuss free speech with Christina Hoff Sommers at DePaul University. And specifically, the claim that his visit would be dangerous, and therefore impermissible, because the university doesn’t have sufficient security staff to protect either the speakers or their audience from harassment and thuggery by its own students.
Well, it turns out that DePaul did manage to scrape together 30 burly chaps in order to repel, as Shapiro puts it, “a 5’9” Jewish guy.” You see, in modern academia, you mustn’t be allowed to discuss censorship and intolerance in modern academia. Because of “security concerns.” At a lecture with no visible protesters. In case you’re wondering, Mr Shapiro ended up having to Skype Dr Sommers from several blocks away, at which point they had a brief online chat for the benefit of the audience, before relocating the event, along with the audience, to a nearby off-campus theatre, where the discussion could take place as intended. The Skype chat starts around 32:38.
And do note the YouTube warning, informing us that the video is “unlisted” and that you should therefore “think twice before sharing.”

Here’s more of Mr Shapiro, filmed last night at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where things got lively. And where leftist protestors tried to prevent non-students from attending the lecture, and then blocked the stage, before finally conveying their righteousness by pounding on the floor. And note Shapiro’s comment about the protestors’ evident privilege when it comes to disruption and impunity. Do we think that a conservative protest against a leftist speaker, with protestors acting in the same manner, using the same tactics and comparable language, would be accommodated in a similar fashion? Without consequences?

For private universities, such behavior is legally permissible, I suppose. For change it’s going to have to be parents of potential students and alumni who do the “dirty” work. See, e.g. Mizzou’s enrollment decline and loss of endowment contributions.

Universities have no reason to put an end to this nonsense. Aside from being ideological fellow travelers/minions the thug students are walking dollar signs. Turn off the faucet of government guaranteed student loans and you solve the problem. However, as it stands there is no monetary incentive for universities to expel any of their golden geese.
I do wonder though, what might happen if the students ever turned their irrational ire on university staff, would they still cleave to the money fount?

You are correct, of course, but it’s worth remembering that the student loan scam ensnares parents as much, if not more than their children. Financial aid packages normally include a “family contribution,” which for middle class families is not doable without the “helpful” parental government loan. Parents need to refuse to sign off on these things and guide their kids to better choices. Unfortunately, too many parents fall into the trap of believing they’re bad parents if they don’t mortgage the farm to send Junior to Commie U.
I think that the proposals that say colleges need some sort of skin in the game plan (if the student defaults on the loans the university is on the hook) make sense. I bet tuition would go down and some administrators (hopefully those in charge of diversity-like tripe) would get fired.

Still so very glad I attended uni back in the bad old days, when anyone came to campus and could speak, and we analyzed poems, plays, etc., by the words that were in them.

‘Course, judging from the results, if any of the Republicans had any quality to ’em, then they could have moved on to the election.
That was the primary ballot. There were no Republicans in the November 8 ballot for state-wide office. All state-wide offices had a choice between two Democrats in the General Election.

Well, I guess I still don’t get it. Obviously the voters voted for Democrats because they see them as better candidates than the Republicans. The fact that there are vast areas on the map that are colored in red doesn’t mean much given that most of the population lives in areas that happen to be colored blue. Of California’s 17.9 million registered voters, 44.8% are registered as Democrats and only 27.3% are registered as Republicans. Of the 23.3% of independent voters, 41% lean Democratic and only 32% lean Republican, so that the independent voters mostly vote Democratic as well. All of this results in the fact that California has no statewide offices that are held by Republicans. That makes it a deep-blue state, which is the statement that Darleen made with which you took issue a few posts back. My own voting preferences and whether or not they are an ersatz religion for me has absolutely nothing to do with this, so I can only conclude that you are, as my previous post speculated, trying to be disagreeable for the sake of it. Which also means that I will not entertain any further thoughts of communicating about this.

We are becoming a banana republic, for want of a better term. California’s weather and natural beauty makes it an attractive place for the uber rich, but it has been shoving the middle class out for years and I see no change unless something shakes it up.
Jerry Brown has had a war against suburbia since the 70s and it goes glove-in-hand with other privileged CEOs in Silicon valley or the upper financial echelons in banking/financial institutions clustered in Frisco & El-Lay. The small business owner – retail, farmer, etc. – are ok to serve them, but not to live near them. Brown wants them clustered in “high density” areas, deprived of independent transportation and quietly thankful for the goodies he will give them in return. Like a high-speed choo-choo from Bakersfield to Fresno (that they are forced to pay for but will never ride)
The NIMBYism in Frisco and Silicon Valley is producing a little backlash…but from the bohemian/hip/grunge types — its gentrification v grime-as-cool and the middle manager family types should just go away and die.

Oh, speaking of utterly San Francisco variety events that occur in San Francisco, last Wednesday I went to see that notorious left wing demagogue George Shultz as he gave a talk and signed copies of his latest book.—I read a bit of my copy before the talk, I’ll get to the rest after finishing up the last twenty-seven something stories in my current reading queue—.
The talk took place at that well known San Francisco center of left wing open capitulation to [um, oh, pick whatever the current right wing straw man], The Marine’s Memorial Association and Foundation. As a further sign of only in San Francisco, Shultz was interviewed by some retired US Marine general who did something in Kuwait and Iraq a bit back.
It was an interesting talk.
And a little before the election, also in San Francisco—because that’s the sort of thing that utterly and absolutely left wing San Francisco does—, some guy named Dunford also gave a talk there, and that also was an interesting talk, and very entertaining—Who are you voting for?.
But then these are the events that get staged in San Francisco and therefore are utterly and absolutely totally left wing, aren’t they.
