Yes, very long exposure. Set the camera on a tripod, start the exposure—and if using a DSLR, one just lets the camera do the work, and lets it even take care of a lot of other concerns—and then wait through two or three cycles . . . .
In fact, Telegraph Hill pictures and particularly, oh, America’s Cup pictures will show you what results one can get when a complete amateur gets his hands on a basic, but very well computerized, digital camera.
