Amazingly, I didn’t lose power. (During Irene in August 2011, I was without power for 46 hours.)
As far as I can tell, the wind never actually become very severe: the highest seems to have been around 60-70 knots, which is certainly a strong wind, but not more than we get on the West coast of Scotland once or twice most winters, and the world doesn’t end.
The problems were mostly caused by the tidal surge: a big spring tide pushed up further by very low pressure and strong winds from the South – 4m above the usual HWM I have heard – that’s enough to cause problems almost anywhere.
Well done to New Yorkers for coping so well. It helps, of course, if you’re wealthy before these things strike – which the Greens would rather we were not. Can you imagine how many deaths would have resulted from a 4m tidal surge in (say) Bangladesh?
