For the first time in my life I found something on the interweb before it appeared on your Friday Ephemera, David.
I’ve saved the Useful Idiots documentaries onto my hard disc against the next time that someone says to me “I admire Tony Benn’s integrity”.
And isn’t it encouraging to hear something like this on the BBC?
Can’t believe that actually got made by the Beeb. Why is Benn treated like a national treasure? He’s always been a useful idiot.
Horace,
“And isn’t it encouraging to hear something like this on the BBC?”
Given the Beeb’s track record, it’s a surprising find. It’s good to hear someone acknowledging the uglier aspects of utopianism – the “dictatorial urges” (expressed directly or vicariously), the disdain for freedom, the comical vanity and readiness to be flattered. And the “Henry Higgins” tendency – the belief that one is smart enough to remake the world.
“The Earth is expanding rapidly.”
Wow. What the fu…?
“What the fu…?”
Astounding, isn’t it?
“Eventually Mankind will be forced to migrate to a new home on Mars before Earth grows to the size of Neptune. Today’s global warming is an early warning to Mankind.”
That’s actual science, that is.
Brilliant pictures of the States in the 30s and 40s, David. Here’s a 100-year-old one of Detroit (a city I love, in what seems to be a minority of one!): http://www.photodump.com/2009/11/23/picture-of-detroit-taken-almost-100-years-ago/
A Dextrose Irish Tory.
Some interesting anagram combinations are offered by “Hyrax Rides Tortoise” at the Internet Anagram Server.
In fact I half-suspected “Hyrax Rides Tortoise” might already BE an anagram for “Barack Hussein Soetoro” or “Milorad R. Blagojevich” or some other similarly resplendent person.
