Far more than the US, the UK has at least had a few alternative parties to vote for. Granted most of them suck as well. I never understood WTF Lib-Dems were about. I’m guessing neither do Lib-Dems. But at least recently they have had Reform and Restore. I have a hard time remembering which is which in the extremism department (added: apparently Restore) but the more centrist one is certainly somewhat viable and the successes in the local elections show that. Regarding the characters speaking English, not ancient Greek, as if this somehow invalidated all other grumbles, the issue is one of suspension of disbelief. Some kinds of drama seem to require a certain formality, a non-casual, non-current-year kind of dialogue and attitude. (Star Trek, for instance, doesn’t really work if the crew sound like, and behave like, a subset of college students in 2026.)
I was reminded of the ITV series Maigret with Rowan Atkinson, which is rather good. Obviously, there’s the issue of the characters not speaking French, which would exclude much of the intended audience, and so English is used. But it’s done quite cleverly and in a way that doesn’t hamper immersion. Again, there’s a period formality that makes the illusion possible. Even in English, it feels like 1950s France.
As I said recently, I don’t generally enjoy Christopher Nolan films, so I’m in no great rush to see The Odyssey. Nothing in the trailers or marketing intrigued me. And the bizarre casting and attempts at modernisation – whether in terms of dialogue or political sensibility – strike me as obstacles to immersion. Making the film seem, for me, more effort than its worth.
Some of the indignant rumblings have been silly, of course. But even the more inflated and dubious claims are no more silly than the idea of Elliot Page – a tiny, mentally ill, self-harming woman – playing a mighty Greek warrior, Sinon – in this film, a proxy for Achilles. The casting is, shall we say, distracting, a reminder of some other, Very Modern, agenda.
My broad objection is with films and dramas leaving grubby politicised fingerprints everywhere, thereby making suspension of disbelief difficult, if not impossible. Say, period and historical dramas that in terms of racial demographics must be made to look like twenty-first century London. As if twenty-first century London reflected the lives of everyone in the audience.
Which strikes me as a parochial conceit. One in which there’s no escape from now.

Well, it seems to me there’s an obvious contradiction between, on the one hand, attempts to evoke a convincing illusion of some ancient historical period, and, on the other, a determination to shoehorn in the fashionable political assumptions of Current Year.

But to claim that the bizarre casting decisions and very contemporary political attitude don’t fit a familiar pattern – a pattern that might alienate a non-trivial section of the potential audience – those politicised fingerprints – seems disingenuous.
TBF, with that sort of sportsmanship, I am starting to see why a guy would want to be a Potemkin woman.

Haven’t seen that but in regards to RA, a contrasting point is Blackadder where much of the humor is the use of modern speech and sensibilities in an anachronistic sense. If you’re making a comedy, sure make Livia Drusilla a sassy black b*tch. Have Caligula look and act like a Latin American drug lord.
Don’t know about over there but over here we routinely put entire Shakespearian plays in different contexts. Richard III set during WWI, or most famously Romeo & Juliette as rival Puerto Rican and Italian street gangs in 1950’s New York City. Though a BMW Series 530i seems like an odd choice. It likely would get bogged down on the beach. Achilles would insist on keeping it for himself anyway. I would swap out the Trojan Horse for an M2 Bradly. Just for fun of course.
