A friend was showing off his new internet connected refrigerator…
My fridge failed recently. Under warranty. Service people replaced the compressor and dryer, and then upgraded the software. The software. And this is without any internet connectivity. I have a sinking feeling that this fridge will last only a fraction as long as my parents’. Also: I noticed after I bought it that the condenser coils are hidden behind a “decorative” louvered grill. Which means it is harder to clean them thoroughly as should be done yearly. Did they think those coils were too unsightly to be seen by tender consumer eyes?
And then there’s my grandparents’ gas range which gave perfect service for 30 or 40 years, and they only stopped using it when they moved in downstairs from my parents.
I have a sinking feeling that this fridge will last only a fraction as long as my parents’
My fridge is 23 y/o, the washer & dryer, 20.
Each have only needed minor repairs over the years that husband was able to do with a few parts and a couple of YouTube videos.
And when they finally are beyond repair, I’m loath to replace them because I do NOT want my appliances “smart”.

My old fridge lasted 30 years, and I only replaced it because I wanted a bigger freezer etc. Dishwasher lasted 30 years, except for the automatic soap dispenser. Washer lasted 20 years.
Aside from more lightly constructed parts (which thus wear out faster), I have heard that regulations requiring lead-free solder mean that all sorts of electronic components will have significantly limited lifetimes.

There was a dubious claim a teen tweeted from a ‘fridge.
However…
After reports emerged questioning Dorothy’s account, LG confirmed that some of its fridge models have social media capabilities, but the company could not confirm whether Dorothy’s tweet was sent from one.
Why the hell would anyone even think a ‘fridge would need “social media capabilities”?

I have lost track of the number of liberals I’ve known who hated conservatives with a white-hot hatred, but who sympathized with communists and communist regimes.
Remember the old joke that liberals (naively) think communists are just “liberals in a hurry”? More accurate would be that liberals are “communists (and fascists) in less of a hurry”.

In a Paris jail. The protection of child rapist Roman Polanski–and a few other things I saw in the news–led me to suspect that France has or had a history of complacency regarding the sexual abuse of children. Anybody across the pond with more definite knowledge?

Finally caught up. Been away for a bit. My employer expects me to work to get paid. Down with capitalism! Anyway, does anyone know of a safe way to donate to the truckers? Oh yes, ping!
In other news, I have become a volunteer firefighter with my local department. I was in the army and have previous law enforcement experience. This is a whole new world for me. I’m enjoying the training even though it’s kicking my “29” year old butt.

Sure. It all starts with lurking. Then maybe comment once a month or so. Then you tell yourself “Only on weekends. On Friday Ephemera posts”. Then just when you get home from work. It was a tough day after all and you deserve some time to unwind. Before long you’re up to six, seven times a day. You “forget” to shower. Your loved ones clamor for your attention but you don’t notice them. You go months without trimming your toenails. Squirrels take up residence in your attic but you don’t notice or care. Then the voices start. Quietly at first so as you don’t notice. But slowly, every day, starting as just a whisper but they get louder and louder, “David. Daaavid…Daaaaaaavid…David, David, David, David”. Then the thousand natural shocks that flesh is heir to, up to a final consummation devoutly to be wished. To die, to sleep; per chance to dream…

Well doing so on Windoze it puts you into an accessibility mode
This is an excellent example, because in certain versions of windows this allows you to access a computer for which you lack the password. The source of the weakness is that accessibility mode is enabled by running an .exe file before the user has entered the password. If only you can replace the accessibility .exe file with another one, you can run whatever you want. Fortunately, this is easy to do if you can generate an error message (I’m fuzzy on the details). You view the detailed error message in notepad, where you can do ‘save as’, which opens a Save File dialog, where you can navigate to the location of the accessibility .exe file, and rename it to something else, and copy or rename a more convenient file (like cmd.exe) to the name of the accessibility .exe file. They you restart the computer, hold down shift for five seconds, and have full access. I did this once with an old family computer whose login we had forgotten. You can find instructions on youtube.
In ten years we’ll be paying McAfee yearly subscriptions of $0.50 per appliance, because otherwise some hacker will lock them up and demand a $10 ransom in bitcoin.
And you have to wonder – how many people actually use these accessibility features. I get that some people have difficulty using their hands, but I suspect the vast majority either find a solution themselves, or still can’t use a computer effectively even with the accessibility features.
Oh yes, ping!
Bless you, sir. May your enemies know the unspeakable shame of mismatched socks.

I built a GUI testing tool for recording Java application UI actions for play-back using accessibility features. At the time it occurred to me that with a little effort what a potentially huge security problem it could be for certain applications. They are /were used by the blind as well via another tool called Jaws which was rather clunky and likely been replaced.

Agree with pst above. My mom had dementia, but was still well enough to access the browser/email/solitaire games on the Windows7 box my parents had. A lightning strike destroyed it even though it was plugged in to a surge protector, and the new computer my dad bought had Windows8. Mom obviously couldn’t figure out the radically new UI, leading to quite a few screaming fits and ending her time on the internet and shutting her that much more off from the rest of the world.
