And Lo, There Came A Great Cutting Of The Hair
The lockdown is easing. The salon beckons. In mere hours I shall once again be radiant and glorious.
You may rejoice by sharing links and bickering, as is the custom.

Victor Davis Hanson on the strange alliance between Woke and the super wealthy

I don’t find an alliance between the woke and the super-wealthy strange. Progressives complain vociferously about the moneyed right, when in fact the real money is coming to the left from dozens of billionaires, not to mention the indecipherable web of donations to the hundreds of progressive “charities” and NGOs coming from who knows where. It’s indistinguishable from a money laundering operation, and a bunch of it, I’d bet, is from unreported foreign donations or otherwise violates the law. Remember when Obama got caught removing the foreign transaction filter on his campaign donations? The moneyed right are paupers and saints in comparison.
I always read Ann Althouse just before this blog and am amused to hear that the Biden administration is asking people like NASA engineers to take a paid leave of absence … to babysit migrants at America’s southern border.

I am grateful for Ann paying the NYT for a subscription so I needn’t.
And ping! I prefer to hit the button when pledge season is over …
LOL
Help a Yank out here. There’s some ripping on the subject there for being from Bristol. I worked there with our recently acquired UK office for a week back in ’99. Seemed like a nice place, though I understand something of a university town. Is it thus hard-leftist or something else?
To be clear/fair, “employees in government agencies like the Department of Homeland Security and NASA” are more likely to be bureaucrats than engineers in any meaningful sense of the word.

Bless you, madam. May any café assistants you encounter know the difference between cheese on toast and a cheese toastie. WHICH IS NOT THE SAME THING.
Seemed like a nice place, though I understand something of a university town.
I haven’t been, but it’s a university town and does have a reputation for being somewhat left-leaning, with a large, quite noisy population of self-styled activists who are seemingly unencumbered by employment or normal adult commitments and have endless time to be upset about things.
My wife has been cutting my hair these past few months. She makes an excellent job it. Now I wonder if I could put her out to work………………..

Not to forget its historical role as a hub of the slave trade…
‘I’ll just leave this here’… 🙂
Curious, in the light of the heart-rending stories of abandoned relatives in care homes, the actual percentage welcoming the lifting of that particular restriction.
…and have endless time to be upset about things.
As explained most eloquently by Charlie. He’s almost certainly at university, so his utterances need to be received with awe and reverence.
asiaseen: Most of us have hair (especially our newly radiant host) but a much smaller proportion have relatives in care homes.
his utterances need to be received with awe and reverence.
Apparently, he “represents all of Bristol, all of Bristol… young people, students, you know, adults.”
Which is a great comfort, I’m sure.
especially our newly radiant host
Not radiant yet.
[ Checks watch. ]
Three hours eighteen minutes. And counting.
Not to forget its historical role as a hub of the slave trade…
When I told my father I was going there he was surprised there was anything left of it. Apparently it also has a historical role as being flattened by Nazi air raids. I believe this was due to a Rolls-Royce engine plant near by. I had a rather rousing evening there upon befriending a group of engineers in a pub…well a couple of pubs…we moved around a lot.

“Stand up straight. Clean your room. Find the tesseract. Hail lobster!”
Some of that JP merchandise looks like Red Lobster rest chain stuff. Why didn’t he stick with the Cthulthu inspired lobster on all of it? Seems kinda risky, copyright wise. Though having contracted briefly for RL and getter a t-shirt with such a lobster on the back, it will now be moving up in my rotation. Though Imma be ordering some of those cthulthu themed shirts and stickers shortly. Just so there won’t be any confusion.
Wait, you hair cutting establishments have been closed for the whole 12+ months?
I think even here in Newsom’s California they’ve been open/closed several times because they couldn’t stop the rogue hair speakeasies. Women of my mother’s generation (she’s 89) are used to the weekly appointment. Mom only missed a couple until the secret knock & password was established.
She actually giggles when she tells me about sneaking around to the back door to be let in for the illicit comb-out – the salon’s front windows blacked out and the closed sign prominent.
Wait, your hair cutting establishments have been closed for the whole 12+ months?
No, just from the start of the year. Which has been quite long enough.
[ Shakes massive hair in seductive slow motion. ]
T-minus one hour. All sections stand by.
“ Cthulthu”
Do you mean Hydra?
Right, off to be sheared and made glorious.
I may be some time.
For WTP’s benefit, the origin of the design. Which is six degrees of separation from Cthulhu, apparently.
Cthulhu, Hydra, Medusa, whatever you got.
T-minus one hour.
Heh…Be careful. Using space-launch simulation lingo you may be tempting fate…probabilities of delays, disasters, etc.
In the interest of bickering and speaking flight lingo and all that…How about that 21,000 MPH commercial aircraft our fearless leader hath foretold? (heh…”how about that”…heh….I just felt my IQ drop 30 points using that phrase…see, I’m trying to fit in with the new cultural normal…) Crickets after that one…but Trump told people to drink bleach, so…
[ Returns from salon, a reinvigorated being. ]
I feel I should have a cigarette or something.
Try one of your own pickled eggs. (If you dare.) They’re said to be hallucinogenic; I ate one once and swear I saw one your sausage rolls – the green one with the yellow spots – walking across the bar towards the till.
In case it needed saying.
Read Ann Althouse article from the link – what shocked me is the reference to a four month leave – is that correct? In what context can that leave be used? Usually workplaces have a bereavement leave but usually that is unpaid and about 5 days (being unpaid it limits that number of honorary mums and aunts that a workers can claim), and a variety of other leaves to accommodate specific things like jury duty. Again most workplaces have short term and long term disability benefits, but you either have to be sick or disabled to claim them. If this is true then workers in government agencies really have landed in clover. I have found most government employees are really only interested in justifying their jobs rather than doing any needed/essential work.
How about that 21,000 MPH commercial aircraft our fearless leader hath foretold?

Apparently, he “represents all of Bristol, all of Bristol… young people, students, you know, adults.”
Charlie needs a haircut, preferably in the military style, or as we call it in Oz, a No. clip. He also needs to learn to elocute, but I suspect he wouldn’t understand, like, what the word, like, means, like.
He also needs to learn to elocute
Might need a teacher with special skills to get anything into his head.
“OT: BLM co-founder suddenly wealthy!”
Don’t worry; Twitter is on it.
“Curious, in the light of the heart-rending stories of abandoned relatives in care homes, the actual percentage welcoming the lifting of that particular restriction.”
In fairness, it probably is a minor concern in terms of the number of people involved. That doesn’t mean it isn’t important. I don’t have any close relatives in a home, for example, but I know that my cousin’s mother-in-law hasn’t seen anyone from her family apart from her son himself (in, at one point, full hazmat gear) in over a year. It’s inhuman.
“I believe this was due to a Rolls-Royce engine plant near by.”
That would be the Bristol Aeroplane Company, no less. It was merged into the post-war British Aircraft Corporation (now BAE Systems), although the engine operation was hived off and ultimately bought by Rolls-Royce in the ’60s. The R-R Olympus engines that powered Concorde were basically a Bristol design (as, arguably, was Concorde itself, but let’s not go there… the French might get upset).
With regard to current “Royal’ events and affairs I note the following report from News.com.au:
“Despite reports Meghan was instructed not to fly by doctors, friends of the Duchess say she stayed back in California because she “doesn’t want to be the centre of attention” at Prince Philip’s funeral.”
If any reading this believe that Princess [in her own mind’] MM does not want to be the centre of attention I have slightly used Shelby Cobra to sell that was owned by an elderly lady who only drove it to church on Sundays.
@ Sam Duncan: “… the French might get upset.”
The French are always upset, so who cares.
I can answer this one, since processing this kind of paperwork is part of my job.
The US has the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA). It applies to serious medical issues of employees and/or employee family members and allows for up to 12 weeks’ worth of protected absences (‘absence’ and ‘leave’ are essentially interchangeable in this context) per year. The absence may or may not be paid (that depends how much paid leave time the employee has available) but it is considered protected (the employer can’t write the employee up for excessive absences, fire him/her, etc.). It requires the certification of a health-care provider that the absence is medically necessary for either the employee or a close family member of the employee.
This sounds more like a deployment leave. I don’t remember the acronym for it or the fiddly details, since in the 25 years I’ve been doing this job I’ve never had to put one through, but it’s a protected leave like FMLA. It applies to reserve servicemembers and National Guard who are not able to report to work because they’ve been called up/deployed somewhere. It protects up to 18 weeks and I think it’s paid as well as protected, but I’d have to go read up on it to be sure.

No more policing? The alternative is ad hoc neighborhood committees of vigilance, with all that that implies.
After all that buildup, don’t we get to see a picture? You can always blur your face.
In my state across the pond. we were only not allowed haircuts for about a month. Our governor has a keen sense of just how far he can push the citizenry.
So just watched Brief Encounter , theme music of which was Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto #2, which led me the Celine Dion’s cover of All By Myself. All those talented works of art. Celine was quite the diva, as were a great number of other artists. But at least they had talent and were (mostly) easy on the eyes. Today’s crop of worthless, talentless PoS all the way down to this vile, defecating and similar fat disgusting fools demand to be treated like divas yet take less criticism, more protection probably, from society that the real talented divas of years past did. What a clown world we live in.

They appear to have assumed that a pretext for looting and exulting in random destruction is, conveniently, the cause of it, the go-to explanation. It seems more likely that the looting and destruction are the result of a demographic that is dysfunctional, all but feral and sociopathic in its sense of entitlement.
It seems more likely that the looting and destruction are the result of a demographic that is dysfunctional, all but feral
Definitely a feral demographic: Cop killer’s widow rages: He should’ve killed more cops:
“The widow of the thug who executed a Jersey City cop over the weekend said Monday that her husband should have killed even more officers — as her neighbors set up a sickening memorial to her fame-seeking spouse…piling empty booze bottles and candles directly under a ‘no gathering’ sign. The site also featured two T-shirts bearing handwritten messages including, ‘REAL N—-Z DONT DIE,’ ‘Forever a ‘G’ ’ and ‘SEE U ON THE OTHER SIDE.’ ”
[I am pretty sure that ‘G’ means ‘Gangster’.]
And from The Daily Caller: “Campbell’s comments were made at a makeshift memorial where her husband’s family and friends left empty bottles of alcohol, balloons and messages such as ‘Thugs in Peace’ honoring the assassin, according to the Jersey Journal… ‘He was a good man. He looked out for everybody on the block,’ Campbell’s friend, Barbara Jones, told the paper.”
This happens when a ghetto thug is justifiably killed: All the other feral creatures in the neighborhood mourn his “murder” and rail against the raycist po-lice.
(I have seen many news reports over the years documenting the spontaneous memorials to dead thugs, and the rage expressed by the thugs’ friends.)
