I’m Sensing Unrest
And so, an open thread, in which to share links and bicker.
I’ll set the ball rolling with the gushing brains of Harvard’s best, and, via Captain Nemo, a textbook display of socialism, darling.
Our betters, you see.
Update:
In the comments, John notes the agitation of Ms Janover, our Harvard intellectual, and adds, rather drily, “Something is obviously upsetting her.” Well, yes. As a Higher Being, she’s offended by “entitled caucasity,” by which she means expectations of reciprocity.
Needless to say, the upset continues. Despite being quoted verbatim – and despite her own video, which she saw fit to share, presumably expecting applause – Ms Janover is now claiming that she has been cruelly misrepresented by “Trump supporters,” whose “hate” she denounces. After threatening to stab people who disagree with her. We’re told, furthermore, that she will “never be silenced into shame.” Which is rather the problem, one might think.
The not-at-all-entitled Ms Janover is also, it seems, astonished that sharing stabby meltdown videos is not a good way to impress employers.
“Half of you don’t even have a college education!”
Honk! Honk!
Honk! Honk!
It is rather glorious when, with immense self-regard and utter obliviousness, they reveal their actual motivations, their actual psychology.
Mz Janover is careful to disclaim her statements as “a joke” for “legal reasons”, whatever that means.
Meanwhile…“…Eleven New Yorkers were shot across 12 hours that night, with several of the victims refusing to cooperate in any investigation. And that doesn’t include the couple gunned down with an AR-15-style rifle Saturday afternoon on an East New York stoop….”

I actually laughed out loud at 0:30, when Prancer says, “You wanna sit here and tell me that you’re educated enough to make demands about shit you know nothing about!” I mean, we go on all the time about projection and lack of self-awareness, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen it performed quite so clearly and comically.
(I would have given that black cop a tenner if he’d just winked and said “You know you’re not my type, sweetheart.”)
Make life miserable for residents and business owners in the neighborhood? “Summer of love! Democracy in action!” Make life miserable for the mayor and her family? Send in the riot squad.
So nice of Mayor Jenny to remind everybody of how the rules work.
I mean, we go on all the time about projection and lack of self-awareness, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen it performed quite so clearly and comically.
Oh, it’s a real thing and extraordinarily common. And if you could somehow subtract the vanity, projection, pretence, and games of spite and status, there wouldn’t be much left of modern, middle-class leftism.
My initial impression is that Miss Harvard appears to possess a fair few privilege points (presumably intelligent, wealthy enough to afford Ivy League fees, extremely cute if terminally annoying, definitely not black) so no obvious signs of being oppressed.
Something is obviously upsetting her. Maybe it’s because she has a paper cut?
Something is obviously upsetting her.
As a Higher Being, she’s offended by expectations of reciprocity.
But hey, feel the love.
‘The CHAZ/CHOP “security” folks are shooting unarmed black men and boys at a much greater rate than the Minneapolis police, who are what this is supposedly all about.’
https://pjmedia.com/instapundit/384220/
there wouldn’t be much left of modern, middle-class leftism
There isn’t anything remaining, and we’re all seeing the subsequent results. Equality under the law WAS achieved, as well as it had ever been in our flawed species’ history. Socialism and communism WERE achieved, and continue to be, all over the globe.
Every single major western institution is very obviously influenced if not outright controlled by the global left. Christianity has been toppled and its tenets successfully ported to collectivist political dogma. Socialist medicine and education – the bedrocks of collectivist political control – are so commonplace that rightwingers routinely defend and expand them. The internet was born free but lives in a world controlled by the left, so was naturally consumed into the left’s sphere of influence.
With the notable exception of American gun rights (for which the science is settled in favor of the gun nuts) the global left has outright won or in the process of winning every war it has started.
So what’s left for the saintly freedom fighters out there who’ve been handed a Gramscian dynasty on a silver platter? Nothing, except to deal with the dissonance created by the fact that utopia has not arrived and the busy work of making everyone ignore who’s fault that could be.
“Half of you don’t even have a college education!”

Heh. I did quite like this reply.
“Send in the riot squad.”
I’ve been watching it live all afternoon (UK time). It’s actually been astonishingly quiet. Most of the tents were empty. I get the distinct impression that they could have done this weeks ago. But then, the “protesters” didn’t turn up at Mayor Jenny’s door weeks ago…
I mean, we go on all the time about projection and lack of self-awareness, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen it performed quite so clearly and comically.
Me thinks the lady doth protest too much.
‘Stereotype’…
https://twitter.com/AbuWankinobbi/status/1278357088478072833
‘Stereotype’
It’s something very close to a self-refuting statement. And it’s curious how much time and effort various police forces are devoting to deterring people from noticing reality.
Heh. I did quite like this reply.
What we’ve paid in plumbing repairs over the last year, I believe we’re funding our plumber’s new boat.
‘Stereotype’…no posted mugshots unless they pose a risk to public safety
And what happens if dark-skinned San Franciscans are stubbornly over-represented among the mugshots they do publish? I’m guessing it’s the same answer to the “what happens if there’s NEVER an effective Wuhan Virus vaccine?” question. IE, “F*ck You. Gibsmedat”.
Also, let’s hear a cheer for a win on police transparency and open government records by not allowing the public to see who’s being oppressed by the state!
[ Swipes for today’s open thread. ]
Point comments that way.
Thanks, Nemo.
Heh, and no problem. I think this is the second thing I’ve posted that’s made its way into a post of its own, the first being that Library Journal article/tweet from last year. The dynamic at work is, I think, quite telling. And frankly, if that’s what a college education does to people, I can see more parents refusing to send their children. Which can only be a good thing.
Class struggle!
Heh. I did quite like this reply.
This one’s rather good too: https://twitter.com/primalpoly/status/1278317115129249792
I went to school for 16-18 years, depending on how you count. Yet I have no idea WTLF the words in this paragraph really mean…
Now whose fault is that, I ask you.
I think this is the second thing I’ve posted that’s made its way into a post of its own,

So what’s left for the saintly freedom fighters out there who’ve been handed a Gramscian dynasty on a silver platter? Nothing, except to deal with the dissonance created by the fact that utopia has not arrived and the busy work of making everyone ignore who’s fault that could be.
I’ve never been able to find the direct quote but such observations always remind me of something Jack Kerouac quoted from Dostoyevsky that If you give man his utopia, he will destroy it with a grin.
And frankly, if that’s what a college education does to people, I can see more parents refusing to send their children.
I think we’ve reached the limit of what gets called a college education. A lot of these so-called professional students are not enrolled in full time programs. They take a course here and a course there while working at Starbucks and tell people they’re college students. Just look at the ages of many of the protestors. They are well beyond what most of us consider college age. I’d be very surprised if Tinkerbell had actually graduated from anything.

Yes. But she must have the patience of a saint. I’m sure I wouldn’t last ten minutes on one of those committees without yelling at the idiots.

Here’s a peach:
Today’s words are craven and degenerate.
“If you give man his utopia, he will destroy it with a grin.”
Google books is great for these kinds of searches. From “The Philosophy of the Beats,” an essay in it from Christopher Adamo:
“To my knowledge, Kerouac uses the term ‘utopia’ only once in his novels — in Desolation Angels: “Dostoevsky said ‘Give man his Utopia and he will deliberately destroy it with a grin’ and I was determined with the same grin to disprove Dostoevsky!”
Adamo continues: “The passage itself raises all the modern ambiguities of the term ‘utopia,’ as the type of ‘utopia’ Dostoevsky has in mind in the quoted passage is precisely the overly programmatic utopias that threatened man’s liberty, dignity, and integrity; and it is hardly the case that Kerouac understood his work as an attempt to show that a person could be happy in such a regimented, scientifically planned and micromanaged society.”
Thus endeth the lesson.
Successfully?
One of the fundamental tenets of Christianity is forgiveness. There’s d—-d little of that in collectivist theory or practice.
The porting went from collectivist dogma to Christianity.
Here’s a peach
If I may repeat here what I posted on their facebook page (so long as it stands):
Yes, Uma. As I recall last I made the effort to look it up, that was the closest I could find. But I have yet to find where, and in what context, Dostoyevsky himself actually said it.
My initial impression is that Miss Harvard appears to possess a fair few privilege points (presumably intelligent, wealthy enough to afford Ivy League fees, extremely cute if terminally annoying, definitely not black) so no obvious signs of being oppressed.
Not necessarily intelligent, or wealthy: Harvard admits a proportion of the former (and not just Kennedys, either; remember that Horst Weasel – David Hogg – was admitted after being turned down by Long Beach State fer cryin’ outloud), and a considerable number of the latter. Relatively few Harvard students pay full tuition. The sticker price is for the scions of wealthy American families with dumb kids (think Lori Laughlin and USC) and the kids of high-profile foreign potentates.

“I’ve never been able to find the direct quote but such observations always remind me of something Jack Kerouac quoted from Dostoyevsky that If you give man his utopia, he will destroy it with a grin.”
I believe Jordan Peterson has attributed something like that to Dostoyevsky. (Possibly in Crime and Punishment or The Demons, because those are the two books of his on Jordan Peterson’s reading list.)
Heh. Cool. I went looking for C&P at the library the last month or two but they don’t seem to have it. I’m sure it’s in the system somewhere. I’ll have to order it now. This question has been puzzling/bugging me for 30 years now. Was not aware of The Demons. Hopefully it’s short-ish as well? I lack the patience for 1000 pages of stuff. I did enjoy Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina but gave up on D’s The Idiot many years ago. One of the few novels I ever quit on. Not that it’s totally relevant but I did read Moby Dick during our lockdown, so hmmmm…but i have tons more stuff to do now.
Hopefully it’s short-ish as well?
A short Dostoevsky novel? No such luck. The Demons/The Possessed is even longer than Crime and Punishment.
…gave up on D’s The Idiot many years ago.
Natasha Cocktease learns a hard lesson. The End.
I think we’ve reached the limit of what gets called a college education.
Given the ongoing list of band names and albums, and given the overall background, the band that David keeps calling for should be:
Manowar scale, complete with choir and orchestra, singing extremely loudly of being utterly innocuous and totally meticulously calculating accountants.
And again, particularly modelled after Manowar, and related.
The albums will be the reference source for songs going over concepts like double entry bookkeeping.
But I have yet to find where, and in what context, Dostoyevsky himself actually said it.
He probably said it in Russian…which may make it easier to find.
He probably said it in Russian…which may make it easier to find.
This is true. Not many Russians have said things.
Something is obviously upsetting her.
The upset continues. Despite being quoted verbatim – and despite her own video, which she saw fit to share, presumably expecting applause – Ms Janover, our Harvard high-thinker, is now claiming that she has been cruelly misrepresented by “Trump supporters,” whose “hate” she denounces. After threatening to stab people who disagree with her. We’re told, furthermore, that she will “never be silenced into shame.” Which is rather the problem, one might think.

Just this minute updated the post.
And regarding the socialism, darling clip, this is apposite.
Turns out, it don’t mean jack
The haste and certainty with which Ms Janover displaces all responsibility is quite a thing. As if employers should in no way be concerned by a potential employee publicly sharing self-satisfied, quite boastful threats of ghetto-rat violence, expressed in some detail. And aimed at people who simply disagree, and who dare to point out the non-reciprocal premise of her own Black Lives Matter posturing.
Please update your files and lifestyles accordingly.
sharing stabby meltdown videos is not a good way to impress potential employers.
What astonishes me most is not that she was fired, but where she was fired from – Deloitte.
The point of cognitive dissonance is that attempting to hold two contradictory positions at the same time is supposed to create dissonance – mental anguish and distress.
Yet here is Janover attempting to be both an analyst for Deloitte as well as a radical anti-Capitalist neo-Marxist at the same time while appearing not to be even remotely troubled by such inherently incompatible beliefs (or even aware that those beliefs might actually be incompatible in the first place).
Its slightly disorienting to watch in much the same way it is to see radical Leftist feminist Laurie Penny asking on Twitter:
Where in London can I get a MacBook screen replaced fast, well, and for less than the cost of a month’s rent?
And then later crowing with delight about becoming a Hollywood screenwriter for a show produced by Joss Whedon, a man whose ex-wife accused him of “years of infidelity and emotional abuse, which she claimed contradicted his public persona as a self-identified feminist activist” according to The Telegraph and that Penny must have known about before she accepted the post as a writer on his show.
It’s almost as if their moral compass is still in its packaging, lying unboxed next to the unread warranty information in a dozen languages.
Incidentally, Janover has started a hashtag #FireMeToo for which there is already at least one enthusiastic supporter:
I am starting at @DeloitteUS in September as a Business Analyst in the same sector that@clurajan was supposed to start at. If getting fired for advocating for Black Lives Matter is a fireable offense, then #firemetoo.
The young man’s mother will no doubt be delighted at this principled white-knightly gesture for an apparently mentally unstable girl he likely barely knows.
Yet here is Janover attempting to be both an analyst for Deloitte as well as a radical anti-Capitalist neo-Marxist at the same time
It’s a tangle of mental and moral wreckage. Which, as I often point out, isn’t arrived at by accident. It’s a tangle that’s taught, encouraged and reinforced, at considerable expense.
As with so many of her ideological peers, Ms Janover’s worldview – a wholesale regurgitation of her lecture notes, one assumes – seems premised on unilateral exemptions and non-reciprocation. A fundamental and habitual double standard. In that, she, it seems, should be free to behave in ways that would be denounced immediately and vehemently if indulged in by those who disagree with her. Her actions and choices, unlike those of thee and me, should never have consequences. Even quite predictable ones that might have easily been avoided. Especially the kind of consequences that she endorses for others, chiefly on grounds of their skin colour.
Given the childish psychology on display, it’s hardly surprising just how seductive it is for people who don’t want to grow up.
“Shower upon him every earthly blessing, drown him in a sea of happiness, so that nothing but bubbles of bliss can be seen on the surface; give him economic prosperity, such that he should have nothing else to do but sleep, eat cakes and busy himself with the continuation of his species, and even then out of sheer ingratitude, sheer spite, man would play you some nasty trick. He would even risk his cakes and would deliberately desire the most fatal rubbish, the most uneconomical absurdity, simply to introduce into all this positive good sense his fatal fantastic element. It is just his fantastic dreams, his vulgar folly that he will desire to retain, simply in order to prove to himself—as though that were so necessary— that men still are men and not the keys of a piano, which the laws of nature threaten to control so completely that soon one will be able to desire nothing but by the calendar. And that is not all: even if man really were nothing but a piano-key, even if this were proved to him by natural science and mathematics, even then he would not become reasonable, but would purposely do something perverse out of simple ingratitude, simply to gain his point. And if he does not find means he will contrive destruction and chaos, will contrive sufferings of all sorts, only to gain his point! He will launch a curse upon the world, and as only man can curse (it is his privilege, the primary distinction between him and other animals), may be by his curse alone he will attain his object—that is, convince himself that he is a man and not a piano-key!”
Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Notes from the Underground
Dude had a way with words.
It’s a tangle of mental and moral wreckage.
The generation of 1968 were reviled as hypocrites for being revolutionaries in their 20s, but putting on a tie and becoming executives in their 30s, homeowners and soccer moms in their 40s.
The generation of 2020 seem to be trying to square that particular circle by cutting out the transitions and getting it all done at one and the same time.
Still, I suppose they have plenty of corporate examples to crib from, what with huge multinational corporations and franchises such as McDonald’s, Starbucks, Nike and, let’s not forget, Gillette and Audi, all spending millions of marketing dollars on open declarations of support for organisations or movements whose activists have been nothing if not crystal clear in arguing that huge multinational corporations and franchises in one form or another are the source of all evil in the world and must therefore be destroyed.
she, it seems, should be free to behave in ways that would be denounced immediately and vehemently if indulged in by those who disagree with her.
Which I suggest is another way of saying, quite likely also regurgitated from her lecture notes, that since moral values are relative all that matters is the will to power.
Which, I believe, is Fascism, isn’t it?
We’re told, furthermore, that she will “never be silenced into shame.” Which is rather the problem, one might think.
That.
Damn, STG. Thank you, thank you, thank you. A 30 year quest (well, ok… I did do other stuff with that time as well) has ended. So it seems Mr. Kerouac, being a much more concise writer, summarized. Which is what made it so hard to find in the original.
Barkeep, a drink for Mr STG on my tab…which I will gladly be paying…ok, not next Tuesday, nor the one after that, but hopefully the one after the one after that…or there abouts.

Just look innocent as you assure that it’s a fresh smell.
At least Ms Janover was let go for something she did this week, rather than something she did two decades ago.
I will not be surprised if Deloitte does not undo her firing, apologizes, fires the person who fired her, and makes a large donation to BLM by week’s end.
“I will not be surprised if Deloitte does not undo her firing….”
I meant – “will not be surprised if Deloitte undoes her firing….”
Thank you, STG, for posting that quote.
I’ll throw in a sausage roll too.
Hmmm, seems like there will be more than tea to throw in the harbor on July 4.
Thanks all. No problem.
Oh. Sausage roll too. Thank you.
Hey… did that just… twitch?

Anyway, about that recent sporting event…
twitch?
Nah. Looked more like a throb to me.
I will not be surprised if Deloitte does not undo her firing, apologizes, fires the person who fired her, and makes a large donation to BLM by week’s end.
Yep. At the rate corporations cave to the twitter and other mobs, this seems like a very safe bet. Hope I’m wrong. Seems lately in such matters I aspire to be wrong.
If getting fired for advocating for Black Lives Matter is a fireable offense, then #firemetoo.
YES! Wonderful. We need to stoke that flame for all it’s worth. People here often and rightly point out hypocrisy as if dissonance was ever an obstacle for the Leftwaffe. Between pulling social media ads (a long con, but still), voice actors quitting roles, and now this we’re seeing a smattering of leftist being made to “live by their own rules”. Faster, please.

And heavens, madam does think highly of herself.
Somehow I suspect he’s not quite Deloitte material, even though he claims to be.
Come now, he’s indigenous, a sugpiaq boy no less. Surely that scores mega-points in the intersectionality olympics. How could Deloitte possibly let go of such fabulousness.
Her would-be White Knight, Caleb King, has a Twitter profile picture that doesn’t obviously say business analyst. I wonder if Deloittes will stick with his obvious potential or take a long hard look at a recruitment process that so nearly landed them with these two losers.
Disclaimer. Many years ago, probably before our host was born, I qualified with and worked for Deloitte Haskins & Sells as they then were. At that time they were a solid and respectable firm of accountants. They appear to have moved on somewhat.
The point of cognitive dissonance is that attempting to hold two contradictory positions at the same time is supposed to create dissonance – mental anguish and distress.
Isn’t the running theme of this blog that these people don’t actually believe what comes out of their mouths?
No links, but something occurred to me recently while watching a bit of Star Wars, and in the absence of a Twitter account I thought I’d share it here:
That’s the Code of the Sith, the creed of the Dark Side. But if I’d told you it was a poem by one of BLM’s founders, how many would have argued?
“After Robert the Bruce’s Statue Was Vandalized by BLM, the National Trust for Scotland Apologized to Blacks for the Medieval King’s Racism”
Heh. My dad was a member of the NTS. I remember looking through the list of candidates for the new Board he was sent a couple of years ago and realising there wasn’t a single one I’d have been happy to vote for. They all had little thumbnail photos and you wouldn’t have picked out any of them as obvious SJWs, but the potted resumés told a different story. “Community Managers”, Big Charity, Civil Servants… this doesn’t surprise me in the slightest.
“McDonald’s, Starbucks, Nike and, let’s not forget, Gillette and Audi, all spending millions of marketing dollars on open declarations of support for organisations or movements whose activists have been nothing if not crystal clear in arguing that huge multinational corporations and franchises in one form or another are the source of all evil in the world and must therefore be destroyed.”
Mercedes…
As I’ve been pointing out elsewhere, the retention of turquoise on the car in deference to their state-owned Malaysian sponsor carries a certain irony. Adultery, eating, smoking or drinking during Ramadan, and “indecent behaviour” – which includes holding hands in public – carry prison sentences in Malaysia, due to its Sharia courts, while its civil courts have a history of denying official recognition to Christian converts. But that’s all fine as long as a black guy who’s made millions driving in F1 can denounce the fans who voluntarily funded his fortune as racist.
“Which I suggest is another way of saying, quite likely also regurgitated from her lecture notes, that since moral values are relative all that matters is the will to power.
Which, I believe, is Fascism, isn’t it?”
Bringing us back to my first point. George Lucas modelled the Sith on the Nazis.
“The job that I’d worked really hard to get and meant a lot to me has called me and fired me because of everything.”
As our host might say, “everything” is doing a lot of load-bearing in this sentence. It wasn’t everything, sweetheart, it was one specific thing, and you’re unlikely to improve your lot in life unless and until you figure that out.
As our host might say, “everything” is doing a lot of load-bearing in this sentence.
It reminded me of this young lady – the one who imagined that employers would rush to offer lucrative and statusful employment to someone schooled in sourness, “social justice” and anti-capitalism, and who describes herself on LinkedIn as a “political troublemaker.” As if that were catnip to people looking for reliable staff.
And then of course there’s this unhappy creature.
as long as a black guy who’s made millions driving in F1 can denounce the fans who voluntarily funded his fortune as racist
First race of the abbreviated season is Austria (3 more days!!), where last year Mercedes lost because they couldn’t cool down their cars. So they changed their livery to…all black. I’m sure when their engines are engulfed in flame this go round it’ll be because of white supremacy or somesuch. I f*cking love science.
Oh FFS …
I have a friend who owns a farm in Kansas. She’s part of a few FB groups dealing with farming/gardening subjects.

By and large, they’re unhappy, spiteful people who lie about their motives, and much else besides. Trying to hurt and dominate others is presumably some kind of compensation.
It’s what they do.
You will not be allowed any non-political space …
By and large, they’re unhappy, spiteful people who lie about their motives, and much else besides. Trying to hurt and dominate others is presumably some kind of compensation.
They’re bullies. Like Brianna above, they come in looking for arms to twist, expecting to be validated by cries of, “Uncle!”
The patient academic lady who had the Twitter thread on defusing such situations made it clear she didn’t hold out hope for situations where the SJWs (arm-twisters) grossly outnumbered the intended prostraters (arm-twistees). Her entire endeavor was one of getting the intended victims to see that arms were being twisted, leaving the bully minority in a position where they either had to back off or openly display their true intention – to make themselves feel better by extracting obedience.
They’re bullies.

As was I, but now I’ve passed the “lesbian middle-school teacher” phase which earned me near-universal scorn and am currently in a “Mediterranean footballer” phase which has produced more than a few flirty stares. Good things come to he who waits, David.

The Case of the Racist Dad
What a gong show.
Harpy number two tipped her hand when she said she didn’t like the look, oops, smirk on the guys face when he was playing with the baby. Isn’t that what it really comes down. These are the people who get offended if you look at them cross-eyed and yet won’t stop rolling their eyes when someone else is talking. Reciprocity indeed.
These are people whose whole lives are spent judging and pre-judging others. They’ve found their home in an ideology that let’s them do it openly, virtuously, and with great feelings of piety. Dad has the right idea to call them out for their behaviour and to really get under their skin by calling them bad people (which they are). That more than anything drives them nuts. Take Harpy number one for example who’s racked with guilt because she’s been called out for “not doing enough.” They are people who feel kicked looking for someone else to kick.
Good things come to he who waits, David.

For me that video is right on the slicing edge of unbearable. Ordinarily when I’m watching frothing-mouthed spittle-flecked entitled screaming racist bitches I have to stop the video because it makes me boiling angry enough to punch out the furniture.
This video is just sufficiently hilariously awful – these deranged buffoons are so absurd, so horrible, so utterly contemptible that I just can’t stop watching the comedy train wreck. And it wrecks so hard it causes me actual pain.
Remember – this is a Community Education Council. Live-Streaming. To the world.

Claira Janover – it’s been the same old pattern:
– someone of the hard left let’s the mask slip and says something nasty
– it is gleefully shared around on social media
– original Leftist collapses into self-pity & announces that they are the victim.
– In advanced cases (Dr Priyamvada Gopal, Jess Phillips, Yasmin Alibhai-Brown) the miscreant refuses to respond to any criticism of what they actually said, instead changing the subject to the hate mail they’ve managed to provoke. In some cases it looks quite deliberate
