Well, yes. It’s a practised neuroticism. And remember, these are the kinds of sentiments and logical contortions, and the kinds of personalities, to which we’re supposed to defer, to which we’re supposed to aspire. As some kind of woke ideal.

Batshit Broshi’s twitter biography proclaims that “meritocracy is literally a joke” and links to an old Guardian article by former Labour MP Michael Young entitled ‘Down with meritocracy’.
I don’t agree with all Mr Young has to say, but he makes some very good points which are still pertinent almost two decades later. Including this:
It is good sense to appoint individual people to jobs on their merit. It is the opposite when those who are judged to have merit of a particular kind harden into a new social class without room in it for others.
This certainly applies today. We have huge numbers of youngsters going to university, generally based on their ability to pay or borrow for their education, rather than their ability. So we now have an allegedly meritocratic class of people who get jobs on the basis of having degree level education, regardless of the worthlessness of that degree. Ms Broshi seems to be an apposite case.
At the same time, the higher education scammers who grow fat on fake education have also developed a new order of merit, the ability to spout PC/woke verbiage. Again, Broshi provides an excellent example. I imagine it is impossible to get a white collar job in any branch of the state in the US or UK without being able to prove ‘merit’ in both these categories.
I wonder if she sees the irony?
Young notes that the Attlee cabinet of 1945 included Ernest Bevin and Herbert Morrison, both men who left school young (11 in Bevin’s case) and yet went on to great things. He contrasts the Attlee cabinet with Blair’s 2001 edition, the latter filled with middle class graduates.
Can you imagine a person who left school at 14 ever making it into the cabinet today?

I watched this via another site that linked to it, and it’s almost comical: after Ms Broshi establishes her woke credentials, a ‘Latino’ (presumably Puerto Rican, from his name), attacks her for being a (bloated) capitalist who just wants to keep his people ignorant. After which, Ms Broshi fervently apologises (“I have work to do!”) – not that it avails her anything.
It might be consoling, watching them spend all the time attacking each other rather than working out how best to spend the money available for the schools in their district: surely, one might suppose, people who spend all their time trying to destroy their colleagues aren’t any sort of threat to anyone. But Frodo has it right:

Many, many people desperately want to avoid even the appearance of racial forgiveness and they have an out-sized influence on world events and have made themselves the speech police.
Dr Randomercam put it well, but I’ll paraphrase: “Imagine I have a button that, when pressed, will erase all racial animus in an instant. Now, imagine how much the media, government, universities, HR departments, etc will pay me NOT to touch it.”

I suggest that 13 universities on the verge of insolvency could be a good thing, weed out some of the dross. And if the current crisis leads to the demise of a bunch of Angry Studies departments at surviving institutions, so much the better. Though I do suspect that such courses are a low cost money-spinner.

The second offers up her understanding that his ‘joking tone’ had implied that “…the hundreds of years of first slavery and then segregation were nothing .. because you happen to have a black friend”.
However, I particularly enjoyed the arrival, at the 7:50 mark, of the ‘Black Whisperer’.
This witch declares, presumably utilising arcane ancient ways of knowing, that “this is how Black and Indigenous People of colour see the world”. And recommends (more) anti-racism training.
Yes, I’m sure that would help.

A lot of what Young projected or intuited in his 1958 book (The Rise of the Meritocracy, 1870-2033) was observed in reality a generation later by people like Charles Murray: the resentment of those stigmatized as inadequate by supposedly objective meritocratic machinery; the danger of arrogance in the officer class no longer kept humble by the awareness of being less innately talented than some of their NCO’s; the undermining of the meritocratic principles from within by elite members using all their skill at manipulating procedural outcomes to make sure their less talented offspring don’t end up at their correct meritocratic grade.
Young’s prediction didn’t take into account any of the extra tensions caused by the mass immigration that ramped up in the years after the book appeared – the resentments caused not only by perceived individual failure but by perceived group failure, the community advocacy and quotas, the reinforced arrogance of the officer class who believe that the foot soldiers are not only intellectually but morally backward.
Bevin and Keir Hardie lost out on their academic schooling, but they went to work among men and learned on the job. Young’s book is part of a left wing intellectual stream in the 1950’s where they correctly feared that they were losing the Bevin’s of their generation who were going to grammar school and ending up like Norman Tebbitt or Margaret Thatcher. That school of thought won the debate in the 1960’s and English people are living the future that Michael Young thought would be better for them – comprehensive schools where working class kids theoretically get a high quality education without losing their connection to their social class, although in practice it seems that the dull and thuggish kids make it difficult for the talented ones to learn anything. A teenage Bevin of today might end up learning nothing in school and nothing on the job.
