Friday Ephemeraren’t
Yes, a glorious opportunity to assemble your own pile of links and oddities in the comments. Gracious host that I am, I’ll set the ball rolling with a display of dad powers; why physicists put a ferret in a particle accelerator; more joys of public transport; a pop icon speaks; and some vintage warnings about the menace of body odour.
Oh, and a headline of note.
Who is ‘Titania McGrath’ and why do woke liberals hate *her* so much?

This is insane. How do police, and a repeat everything media, mistake a 23 year old man with a 5 o’clock shadow going on as a 14 year old boy?
I suspect that the police doubted his story from the beginning but for legal and professional reasons could not publicly say anything until they had fully checked his claims–much as the Chicago police doubted Jesse Smollett’s story from the beginning.
OK, but is this not…EXACTLY…where it would have been appropriate to use the term “identifies as”? They use “alleged” in similar circumstances. There is no justifiable reason that a society must continue to be this stupid.
Chart of note.

The continuing heroic adventures of Florida Man . . . . . .
I quite expect a DCEU movie could be added to the schedule, given how oh so cheerful things have been so far . . .

It all makes sense.
A shameful neglect of hamster owners here:
https://www.pressherald.com/2019/04/05/dog-owners-are-much-happier-than-cat-owners-survey-finds/
I don’t think much of the article. It did not mention the obvious category of “people who have settled for a cat because the landlord won’t allow dogs.” There are a lot of those in the U.S.
Crazy people in general seem as likely to have dogs as cats, and much more likely to have more than one of each species. Crazy white middle-class-and-up women, of course, are likely to go for cats. Possibly dog owners are happier because they’re saner to begin with. Black people, sane or in-, seem to go more for dogs, at least around here. I know at least 75 black people, 2 of them have a cat, 30 or so of the rest have at least one dog. Nobody has a pit bull; around here, pit bulls are a trailer-park-type dog.
I once read an article of advice a man gave his son, that included “Never marry a woman who has more than one cat.” 😄. I think she should be allowed 2 in case she obtained the cats as kittens. One kitten might as well be named Genghis Khan because he will leave a path of destruction in his wake; two will keep each other too busy to destroy your house. I agree that more than two is a big red flag. And I don’t think barn cats should count against the lady’s total. What do you think?
Hi Terry H,
Titania’s a parody, I forget the author’s real name, and I had read he got shut down. I’m glad he’s able to entertain the Internet once more.
Well, I was able to see the tweet, after a few tries that didn’t work, and I see you already knew that. Never mind.
How many cats does Titania have? I’ll say 6.
It all makes sense.
My favorite part about the Obama era is:
“My name is Obamandias, King of Kings:
Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!”
Not bad for a dead white guy from over 200 years ago.

I’ve always had cats and dogs. Sometimes just a dog (mom was allergic to cats until later years) sometimes just cats. I have just 2 cats now (litter mates rescued from the pound) because I think it’s unfair to a dog not to have their humans at home for 10+ hours per day but two cats can entertain themselves.
One of the things I look forward to in retirement [checks calendar … 195 days!] is getting a dog again. I still miss the German Shepherd I had when my girls were growing up and I was a SAHM.
I’d like to have a cat and a dog but Son is terrified of dogs so I’m restricted to cats and fish.
I believe blogger Zombie has documented such lunatics in her reports from San Francisco.
“Her”? Zombie’s a chick?
“Her”? Zombie’s a chick?
I believe I read that somewhere in an item about Zombie.
I was wondering, if that guy truly believes he’s a dog, does he greet friends by sniffing their rears? How far does he take it? I think it’s a giant hoax, myself…
Here is Zombie’s coverage of an event at which gay men pretend they are dogs:

San Francisco is well known as a giant loony bin. Most Americans avoid the place for that reason. We’ll all have to wait for the Russian or Chinese takeover to see the wonderful Japanese gardens there.
I hope it’s the Russians, because it’s my understanding that their language is not quite as hard to learn as Chinese. I have given up hope that the U.S. will be purchased by an army of English-speaking bloggers armed with flamethrowers and attack hamsters.
My money’s on the Chinese, who buy more of America every day.
Here is Zombie’s coverage
WARNING! WARNING! Do NOT, I repeat, do NOT, click on the link to Zombie’s “report” of the “Up your Alley” festival in San Francisco linked in the post that pst314 has shared. pst314’s link is (reasonably) benign. The report linked *there* however…if you value your sanity, stay away!
I’m going to go drink a few gallons bleach now.
Promising.

If it’s bad for us, think of the poor vistors in Frisco who accidentally wander into that “festival” after stepping over and around the vagrants/homeless pooping and pissing on the street.
Matter of note: “Homeless” is used in an attempt to elicit sympathy … but when a “homeless” person commits a particularly awful crime, they suddenly become “vagrants” in the press.
Promising
I’m going to have to look into this. One of the students at the school where I work has told me that he’s been diagnosed with Schizophrenia. He’s certainly a bit odd. If a ketogenic diet can help him, then that’s something he needs to know.
Thanks for the link!
Does anyone know how bad conditions are in San Jose? I’d like to go see the Winchester mansion, but it’s not worth risking your life over. (At least one person in California has died from an infection caused by dried particles of human poop blowin’ in the wind.)
Pogonip
San Jose isn’t Frisco. Being a bedroom community, it’s expensive, but they don’t have the same issues as on the peninsula.
Don’t visit Los Angeles city hall… one attorney came down with typhus do to the homeless encampments around the buildings.
So is San Jose safe to visit?
Pogonip
I haven’t been there for a couple of years, but I found it much more agreeable in atmosphere than Frisco. It’s still a major city and the awareness and precautions you take for any urban area you should take there.
That said, don’t let Frisco keep you from visiting Winchester Mystery House.
Getting in touch with your inner Elven.
Thanks, Darleen! We’d probably just go from hotel to House to home, ought to be pretty safe.
Well, she has at least transformed herself into an attractive freak with a pretty costume, certainly a step in the right direction. And she seems to be pretty happy about it all.
Here’s a site about it:

When I spent a few weeks as a cat at the age of 4, I’m sure my parents never dreamed their kitten—er, daughter—was 50 years ahead of her time.
It may be coming back as I enter my 2nd childhood (stipulating for the moment that I ever got out of the first one). About a month ago Son woke me up asking what was wrong. Nothing, why? “You were howling in your sleep.” I must have been howling quite loudly, as Son can sleep through a commercial lawnmower roaring outside.
Pogonip
How long are you staying in California? We’ve had 163% of normal snowfall in the Sierras this year which is just starting to melt, meaning Yosemite is going to have the grandest of waterfalls.
Napa Valley will be sweet and there’s a train. that runs the length of the valley which serves a fine dinner as you ride along. Not to mention all the wine tasting. 🙂
And this is well worth a whole day.
Well, since we won’t be out till at least next spring, we can probably stay as long as we can afford (12 minutes, maybe)?
So is San Jose safe to visit?
Oh, yes, SJ is safe to visit, SF is safe to visit, with related circumstances quite totally established here some bit back.
Oh, and for randomly encountering any of the assorted festivals and events that occur in SF, or SJ, prolly, it is very possible for a tourist to turn a corner and without warning discover a Columbus Day Parade . . . I did that a few years back when I was out eyeballing that year’s Fleet Week events.
As far as any of the more involved or complicated events, for those, they are paid entry only, or major fundraising events with very evident gateways that have to be entered through, or something of the sort. Therefore, tourists and other random pedestrians just do not “”accidentally””—double quotes deliberate there—“”find”” themselves “”suddenly”” in the middle of some such event, any such person has deliberately gone looking for and quite voluntarily and deliberately joined that crowd . . . .
. . . we can probably stay as long as we can afford (12 minutes, maybe)?
Six.
Lyft just did its IPO, and I’m reading of the Golden Gate Bridge getting a boost in the toll.

Any tourists who were in Frisco on March 9 in such touristy places like the “Fisherman’s Wharf, the Marina, Lombard, North Beach, along Embarcadero, the Civic Center, the Haight, and the Castro” got to see, whether they wanted to or not, crowds of naked bike riders.
Not to mention that public nudity is something that happens frequently and without consequence to the person exposing their genitals, even if it is ostensibly illegal.
…SF is safe to visit…
Every wonder why Pelosi lives in Napa and not really in her district ?
Tourists express shock and horror after visiting San Francisco, saying ‘rampant drug use and violent crime’ will keep them from ever coming back.
Visitors are noticing and rethinking booking events and vacations at hotels around the city…While homelessness is nothing new for the city, hoteliers and local business say street conditions have worsened.
They are the ones affected, but I am sure our local cheerleader knows better.
U-Haul 15 foot truck (1 bedroom apartment) San Francisco – Jackson, MS: $2443; Jackson to San Francisco: $1172. Truck same, distance same – there may be a clue there.
“Let’s take care of the out of control homeless” NIMBY.
We could do this all day…
WARNING! WARNING! Do NOT, I repeat, do NOT, click on the link to Zombie’s “report” of the “Up your Alley” festival in San Francisco
Sorry, I forgot that a warning is essential for some of Zombie’s posts.
. . .crowds of naked bike riders.
Uh huh. A moving target of that moment, also completely missed by how many hundreds of thousands???
When I went in to work yesterday morning in SF, all I saw was the usual urban traffic that would be standard for any current city. When I went out to dinner last night in SF, again, all I saw was the usual urban traffic that would be standard for any current city—Albeit dinner was in Chinatown, so there were more apparent tourists there than average.
And occurrences particularly being in the region have already been discussed, confirmed, with definite agreement awhile back, where mere denial of the established facts ain’t making those facts go away . . .
…SF is safe to visit…
Every wonder why Pelosi lives in Napa and not really in her district ?
Nancy Pelosi? The, established conservative who is quite well documented as being conservative instead of left wing or right wing, Nancy Pelosi?
Well, you’re actually bringing up a pair of issues.
One, regarding why a noted conservative lives where she lives, I have no idea, perhaps you should ask her.
In the meantime, for a very easy observational guess regarding conservatives who live in Marin instead of SF, Marin does have different geography than block after block of buildings, does have more immediate proximity to SF with that geography, rather than going all the way down the peninsula or east past Mt Diablo, Etc, etc, etc . . .
. .
Oh, and issue number two, regarding where Nancy Pelosi lives, apparently she lives in San Francisco rather than Marin.
Although apparently she does have an additional house up north, but then conservatives are indeed allowed to have Stuff. You might find it astounding, but apparently people are even allowed to have Stuff in separate locations.
“Let’s take care of the out of control homeless” NIMBY.
Why thank you for the handoff, there!! That story of San Franciscans vs screaming hipsters is indeed a situationally hilarious example that recently popped up . . . . although if you cited an actual source instead of something that might have gotten doctored, you wouldn’t have gotten so suckered . . .
For all those screaming at their own mayor, for those repeatedly described as living in the area, in the last decadeIsh, that area has gotten the one most utterly swamped in hipster, hipster, hipster, hipster, hipster . . . . . . . . The conservative in San Francisco addresses the issues of the moment, as always, where by contrast it’s the other than conservative that screams Me Me Me Me Me . . . .
We could do this all day…
Oh, do. Especially because you’ll be joining me in pointing out reality, and sticking to reality really is always easier than yowling denials like all those other hipsters . . .
Nancy Pelosi? The, established conservative who is quite well documented as being conservative…
Repeatedly quoting whatever poor logorrheic nut wrote that dogs breakfast flight of ideas, “The Curia”, will not change reality, Pelosi into anything other than an far-leftist, or the definition of “conservative” (or hipster) no matter how much how much you want it to, or strut while sitting at your keyboard (which is a neat trick, I’ll give you that).
However, you keep being you and cheerleading for the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce to justify your poor life choices while the comparatively normal people keeping the dystopia afloat bail out, as the reliably red SFGate points out, repeatedly.
You are dismissed.
…will not change Pelosi into anything other than an far-leftist
Pelosi is conservative…if you’re Lenin. 😉
. . . . to justify your poor life choices . . .
Oh, My, you actually do have an objection to being literate, intelligent, thoughtful, aware, and noting the details. Such an objection hasn’t gotten you anywhere, now has it?
Oh, speaking of details, in that first article you cited rather than actually reading, the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce has basically nothing to do with why people are leaving.—Yes, do go ahead and actually read that article for the first time: Silicon Valley has arguably one of the highest costs of living in the nation. . . . . The top destination for Bay Area residents looking to leave is Sacramento, followed by Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland and San Diego.
In turn, from that second article:
There aren’t really any “poor life choices” when doing little more than noting the local cost of living, particularly when doing the basic economic math.
Or, as another conservative pointed out a few years back, It’s the economy, stupid
And this time around, with a fairly booming economy, the jobs have been disappearing due to the various aspects of automation . . .
Code 9000.
Ya feel me yet?
Hal, your main malfunction, out of many, is that you are boring, everything you post is a minor variant of the same.
1) A specious or ludicrous statement soon refuted by many (e.g., Pelosi is a conservative, preppies=hipsters).
2) Your assertion that you are right based on links to your favorite nonsense website, and/or self referential links to your old posts here that normally, usually, generally, refer to your favorite nonsense website, and the rare google search to a link that actually fails to support your specious or ludicrous statement.
3) Your chest pounding, strutting, and sneering assertions that your reality regarding the specious or ludicrous statement is the One True Reality and everyone else on the planet is wrong, even though you consistently fail to demonstrate that.
I get that you are a walking Dunning-Kruger exhibition, but get a new schtick, you are just tedious.
Code 9000, roger.
. . . everything you post is a minor variant of the same.
Yeah, dude, we see you complaining that reality is like just sooo mean, y’know, like, totally . . . . again.
In the meantime, no matter how much you scream to the contrary, your mere denial does not make a refutation . . . .
So, as ever, should you actually come up with a refutation or clarification of something, do cite.
I expect we’ll be here.
Farnsworth, remember the comical assertion that Mr. Golden Ears could discern differences in audio quality of various ultra hi-fi electronics, combined with the simultaneous assertion that no double-blind test of this assertion was possible?
An interesting assertion, especially since “hi-fi” audio has been the domain of charlatans for decades.
One of my favorite tests was a demonstration that a bunch of audiophiles couldn’t tell the difference between insanely expensive gold-braided signal cable and a metal coat hanger wire that the tester had unwound and jammed into the jack.
An interesting assertion, especially since “hi-fi” audio has been the domain of charlatans for decades.
Well, if people are going to be obsessive nuts or knowing frauds about something, better that it’s audio equipment than race and gender and economics.
Or closing italics tags……there.
Sorry.
I’ll just quietly let myself out now.
