I found two dozen identical copies of that ‘Man Wins Jackpot, Ex-Wife Calls Him’ story, mostly from radio or TV stations. After plowing through them, I found a ‘New York Post’ article. NYP actually seems to have called and interviewed the ex-wife, who said that — No — she had not called her ex, and — No — she wasn’t going to try and get any of the money, and — No — she didn’t want him back.
It’s sad when the ‘New York Post’ is the most professional and responsible news organization covering a story.

This is insane. How do police, and a repeat everything media, mistake a 23 year old man with a 5 o’clock shadow going on as a 14 year old boy? One telling a somewhat fantastical story of escape from abduction and 8 years of captivity? Is everyone an idiot? What happened to the term “identifies as”? I don’t think much of the article. It did not mention the obvious category of “people who have settled for a cat because the landlord won’t allow dogs.” There are a lot of those in the U.S.
Crazy people in general seem as likely to have dogs as cats, and much more likely to have more than one of each species. Crazy white middle-class-and-up women, of course, are likely to go for cats. Possibly dog owners are happier because they’re saner to begin with. Black people, sane or in-, seem to go more for dogs, at least around here. I know at least 75 black people, 2 of them have a cat, 30 or so of the rest have at least one dog. Nobody has a pit bull; around here, pit bulls are a trailer-park-type dog.
I once read an article of advice a man gave his son, that included “Never marry a woman who has more than one cat.” 😄. I think she should be allowed 2 in case she obtained the cats as kittens. One kitten might as well be named Genghis Khan because he will leave a path of destruction in his wake; two will keep each other too busy to destroy your house. I agree that more than two is a big red flag. And I don’t think barn cats should count against the lady’s total. What do you think?

I’ve always had cats and dogs. Sometimes just a dog (mom was allergic to cats until later years) sometimes just cats. I have just 2 cats now (litter mates rescued from the pound) because I think it’s unfair to a dog not to have their humans at home for 10+ hours per day but two cats can entertain themselves.
One of the things I look forward to in retirement [checks calendar … 195 days!] is getting a dog again. I still miss the German Shepherd I had when my girls were growing up and I was a SAHM.

If it’s bad for us, think of the poor vistors in Frisco who accidentally wander into that “festival” after stepping over and around the vagrants/homeless pooping and pissing on the street.
Matter of note: “Homeless” is used in an attempt to elicit sympathy … but when a “homeless” person commits a particularly awful crime, they suddenly become “vagrants” in the press.

How long are you staying in California? We’ve had 163% of normal snowfall in the Sierras this year which is just starting to melt, meaning Yosemite is going to have the grandest of waterfalls.
Napa Valley will be sweet and there’s a train. that runs the length of the valley which serves a fine dinner as you ride along. Not to mention all the wine tasting. 🙂
And this is well worth a whole day.

Oh, yes, SJ is safe to visit, SF is safe to visit, with related circumstances quite totally established here some bit back.
Oh, and for randomly encountering any of the assorted festivals and events that occur in SF, or SJ, prolly, it is very possible for a tourist to turn a corner and without warning discover a Columbus Day Parade . . . I did that a few years back when I was out eyeballing that year’s Fleet Week events.
As far as any of the more involved or complicated events, for those, they are paid entry only, or major fundraising events with very evident gateways that have to be entered through, or something of the sort. Therefore, tourists and other random pedestrians just do not “”accidentally””—double quotes deliberate there—“”find”” themselves “”suddenly”” in the middle of some such event, any such person has deliberately gone looking for and quite voluntarily and deliberately joined that crowd . . . .

The top destination for Bay Area residents looking to leave is Sacramento, followed by Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland and San Diego.
