Claire Lehmann on the denial of gender differences and its (literally) poisonous effects:
[Feminist author Cordelia Fine] argued that neuroscientists should be schooled in the theory of intersectionality — “the principle that important social identities like gender, ethnicity, and social class mutually constitute, reinforce, and naturalise one another.” At first glance, this is a peculiar demand… To practise intersectionality, one must privilege the voices of black women over white women, and the voices of women over men, for example. The least privileged deserve the most sympathy; the straight white male deserves the least. The relevance for neuroscience is unclear at best. But its utility as an ideological weapon has made it popular among academics hoping to politicise scholarship and silence their enemies.
Richard Reeves and Dmitrios Halikias on our new would-be overlords:
One overlooked irony of the events at Middlebury is how they proved some of the points that [Charles] Murray made in his book, Coming Apart, which he had been invited to discuss. The book documents the separation of a “new upper class,” raised in rich neighbourhoods, immersed in liberal, cosmopolitan values, and educated at expensive, liberal universities. In other words, it profiles the students of Middlebury College… We found that the schools where students have attempted to disinvite speakers are substantially wealthier and more expensive than average. Since 2014, there have been attempts at some 90 colleges to disinvite speakers, mostly conservatives. The average enrollee at a college where students have attempted to restrict free speech comes from a family with an annual income $32,000 higher than that of the average student in America. In the chart below, the pattern is clear: the more economically exclusive the institution, the more likely it is the students have attempted to hinder free speech.
For those who missed it, Dr Murray’s first-hand account of the Middlebury protest-cum-riot can be found here.
Jordan Peterson on “white privilege” as a rhetorical tactic:
The idea that you can target an ethnic group with a collective crime, regardless of the specific innocence or guilt of the constituent elements of that group, there is absolutely nothing that’s more racist than that. It’s absolutely abhorrent… and precisely the sort of danger that people who are really looking for trouble would push.
And Cathy Young on the dishonesties and delusions of feminist author Rebecca Solnit:
Solnit claims domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to American women; yet Centres for Disease Control and Prevention statistics show that all assault, domestic or not, ranks eighth among causes of injury to women — behind not only falls and car accidents but insect stings and animal bites.

Depressing to see it looks like we’re going to have to learn this all over again.
Nothing demonstrates that Leftism in its various incarnations is about the acquisition of raw power and not a coherent set of universal principles better than the Lehmann link above. When there are sinecures and public money to be had (extorted), then by all means, let us focus our scientific attention on problems specific to those blessed with two X chromosomes. See, e.g. Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Planned Parenthood, ad infinitum. But when the research begins to veer into areas which conflict with the narrative and have the potential to adversely affect the groups power, then it must be denounced and the investigators hounded into obscurity.
Jordan Peterson, again, on “cultural appropriation” (and pornography for women).
Penny: hoisted by her own petard once again.
Give it another year or two of this and she’s going to be a fully paid-up member of the alt-right.

Ah, the crab bucket left. Where, despite all protestations, it ain’t about caring, but about really, really wanting to nip at someone.

Ah, the crab bucket left.
I am reminded of a Heavy Metal comic I read a few decades ago in which an admiral takes over a country and becomes a dictator. One of his many totalitarian edicts is to make all art illegal, even going so far as to have all of his soldiers trained to immediately destroy any picture, portrait, or painting on sight. Said edict blows up in his face, quite literally, much later in his reign when he removes his shirt prior to having grown up time with some new concubines and they see a tattoo he got when he was young, impressionable, and in the navy. Their screaming alerts the guards, who break down the door, see the tattoo, and fill the dictator’s tattoo (and chest) full of holes.
It seemed impossibly over the top at the time…
really wanting to nip at someone
Perhaps this will develop into a chink in the armor of her self-righteous lack of self-awareness.
I’ll leave this here.

Just in case.
Jordan Peterson on “white privilege” as a rhetorical tactic:
I got into an internet argument about a year ago ( I know!) over ‘White Privilege’ where someone was saying that White students in the US did better on standardised tests than Black and Latin students and this was evidence of said ‘White Privilege’. However, when I pointed out that Jewish and Asian students did better than Whites on the tests, I was informed that this was different because Jews and Asians are both smarter and work harder than White people – nothing to do with privilege at all.
I’ll leave this here.
Is that intended for me? Because I’m pretty sure in included that. Even used the “preview” button and everything…
Even used the “preview” button and everything
It’s a message for general consumption, no-one in particular.
Wait a minute.
You seem to be perspiring… suspiciously.
Laurie Penny is apparently of Irish/Jewish/Maltese descent. In her quest for clothes to fit her petite(?) frame, isn’t it blatant cultural appropriation to ask where “small Asian women in the UK buy their clothes”? Can she not read? Most clothing stores have ranges labelled “petite”. (Oops, my error: they’ll be in the women’s section.)
Isn’t Maltese a breed of annoying, yippy, ankle-biting little dog?
What if neuroscience confirmed that status anxiety and envy were the Left’s primary motivators? That would be so unfair.
all assault, domestic or not, ranks eighth among causes of injury to women
When I was in university in the 90’s the meme that domestic violence was the #1 killer of women was prevalent. People were quite put out when I kept correcting them that it was unambiguously and uncontroversially heart disease, just like it had always been. Not as stridently, but a sign of things to come.

Don’t make me post the “Oscar Anderson, billionaire dinosaur” link again.
. . . some of the points that [Charles] Murray made in his book, Coming Apart, . . . the separation of a “new upper class,” raised in rich neighbourhoods, immersed in liberal, cosmopolitan values, and educated at expensive, liberal universities.
I haven’t read the book, but that description looks awfully familiar, particularly being the Upper Class Peon:
I’ll leave this here.
Heh!!!!!
What can also help while using the preview button is to finish the post with a couple of hard returns and something clearly unrelated, like test.
If “test” comes out more resembling _)*#$&_*()#^$!!!, then go looking for the tag you put in that’s rather out of sorts.
Solnit claims domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to American women; yet Centres for Disease Control and Prevention statistics show . . .
In parallel, there are all the left wing claims that [immense number] are killed each [minuscule amount of time] by firearms, and then while I haven’t looked at the exact sequence and numbers in awhile, the American CDC keeps reporting that, to paraphrase, the actual causes of death are ranked as;
Assorted diseases
—
—
Accidents
—
—
Suicides, including those by firearm . .
—
—
Murders, including those by firearm . . .
. . . or mebbe it was murders and then suicides. As stated, been awhile since I’ve looked, but a rather telling bit was the number of times I’d see firearms mixed in with everything else instead of being on their own.
“Oscar Anderson, billionaire dinosaur”
. . . . ?????!!!?
Oh. Got it.
I get an impression that someone got bored, but then writing that one could be a cure for boredom . . .
Solnit is merely continuing the long feminist tradition of making shit up. File the latest along with the “rule of thumb” attributed to Romulus in ancient Rome and spikes of domestic partner violence on Super Bowl Sunday.
Aside: I’m going to start ending all my comments with a prophylactic “close italics” tag. Practice Safe Commenting!

How dare you, a mere man, question the standards of feminist scholarship?
Are you assigning R Sherman a gender David? Xe might not like that!
I denounce myself.
I have certainly implied, if not directly stated, a male identity, so the universe remains in balance.

Hey, I don’t make the rules.
Who do?
Twenty or so years ago, when anorexia was the patriarchy’s horreur de jure, it was widely, and dare I say hysterically, bandied about that eating disorders killed more than 150,000 women in the US per year.
Gender correlated differences in analytical rigor might be one of those things that, mysteriously, doesn’t exist even when it sure as heck seems like it does. Naomi Wolf was wrong by a factor of 300.
And since gender differences don’t exist, then surely transgender differences are just as illusory.
I’m a lesbian trapped in a man’s body. Where do I sign up for the women’s wrestling team?
BTW, Coming Apart is excellent, and very sobering.
I’m a lesbian trapped in a man’s body.
There’s a lot of us like that.
Hmm, what do I do if I want to end my comment with … an unclosed italic!
So, I googled “Oscar Anderson, billionaire dinosaur,” found the Amazon link and read the following about the author with my emphasis:
Writing use to just be a hobby for the young student but he progressively became more serious about his novels once he became a published author.
That explains his entire oeuvre, obviously.
OT, just watched Iron Fist. Don’t get the bad reviews, enjoyed it enormously. I am now going to centre my chi, and make some bacon. Awesome stylely.
In the spirit of all the Italicking going on lately, I wonder what effect this will have. I mean aside from me getting banned.
.
(Sorry)

A sage old doctor of my acquaintance has observed that “eating disorders” never exist on their own; they are always co-morbid with other, more serious conditions and that treating the eating disorder is fruitless. Treat the underlying condition, and the eating disorder disappears.
This would imply that the eating disorder is really just a kind of dysfunctional coping mechanism.
just watched Iron Fist. Don’t get the bad reviews
It’s legitimately a bit anachronistic. It’s the Tarzan problem – there have been black people in Africa for millions of years, but one white guy shows up and suddenly he’s King of the Jungle? Iron Fist was created in the 1970’s for a white audience that was only just becoming aware of Chinese Kung Fu flicks and wouldn’t have identified with a Chinese protagonist. But the notion that Shou-Lao only gave up his power to the random white kid and not, say, any of the other billion Chinese people in the vicinity can come across a bit condescending.
In more prosaic terms, there’s also the fact that the “rich orphan who learns the secrets of ass-kicking in an exotic foreign enclave returns home to lay claim to his birthright” origin story has been done rather a lot lately.
New superhero-related outrage discovered.
Hey, I don’t make the rules.

The Authorities.
(Sorry)
You are not. That’s why you did that at two AM London time or so, when David was sound asleep.
And that does look awfully entertaining . . . !
And in the laugh-a-minute world of transgender activism:
And,
It seems to me that the embrace of leftist identity politics, and the attitudes that go with it, has, in terms of reputation and mental wellbeing, not exactly helped the transgender world.
But the notion that Shou-Lao only gave up his power to the random white kid and not, say, any of the other billion Chinese people in the vicinity can come across a bit condescending.
Granting that your argument is quite sound, the story does also rather remind of the introduction and confirmation of the Sixth Patriarch.
just watched Iron Fist. Don’t get the bad reviews
I couldn’t get past the trailer. From the little I remember of the comics, Iron Fist is a cheesy, derivative and uninteresting character, and loaded with all of the baggage mentioned above. Even as a child, the ludicrous costume, complete with bare chest and dainty lemon slippers, struck me as a bridge too far. And the casting of Finn Jones, last seen as Game of Thrones’ Loras Tyrell, the gay lover of Renly Baratheon, and an ostentatious admirer of ladies’ gowns, just pushed the burning train wreck over a cliff.
So far as I can see, it was doomed before it even started filming.
New superhero-related outrage discovered.
Oh, I missed the sound of that. There must have been a car passing by at that moment, or a fire truck a couple of blocks away, or something . . .
. . . bare chest and dainty lemon slippers . . .
I thought there already was a movie about Vaslav Nijinsky.
