I think there may be a word missing. (h/t, Julia) // How does your urologist lean? // Mrs Peel and other things. // Reversing the Avengers. // The Voder, 1939. // Miracle breakthrough in vertical bacon cooking. // Brutalist colouring book. Because concrete needs colour. // The cure for crying toddlers. // Feminist art. Because women are all about dirty pants, apparently. (h/t, SJW Nonsense.) // Feminist prose: “Your boner is a symbol of a world that is trying to destroy me.” // Eye robot. // Chocolate bolts. (h/t, Matthew) // Submarine tourism didn’t catch on. // Unexpected news. // They’re gaining on us. // Selfie culture. // The thrill of yarn. // Throaty notes. // Please take a moment to think of Maria. // And finally, improbably, “A woman flew through a tornado in a bathtub and survived.”
Ace has a post up that touches on a subject often discussed in these pages:
(Sorry for the wall-of-text quote, but I was having difficulty in picking out a small portion without the gist of it being lost. Also, I hope it isn’t rude to go off-topic – is that possible in an Ephemera post? – on the first comment, but there it is…)
Ah, drat! It was there, then it wasn’t.
Torches and pitchforks for the spam filter!
Brutalist colouring book. Because concrete needs colour.
I think I’ve mentioned it before but I was born in 1972. When I was a kid and had coloring books, I tried to color the people as wearing plaid pants.
If you take a look at that ‘Politics of Professions’ page it seems like the more abstract and disconnected from tangible, practical results a profession is, the more likely it is Democratic majority. Or maybe it’s just the ones I looked at.
Feminist art.
Oh come on, ladies. Enough! #FreeBleeding was a 4Chan prank! Yes, the Patriarchy tricked you into humiliating yourselves.
Damn.
Throaty notes.
I ran it through Google Translate and got a general paraphrase:
Y’know, we coulda done this in comfort down in that vally back there but these idiots hadda drag my ass up this mountain. Where do they think we are Tibet?!?!??!”
RE: Selfies. This past summer, my wife and I were hiking around out West, including a week in Yellowstone. Most of the time we were in the weeds, but we hit a few of the touristy spots. I was astounded by the volume of people walking around with selfie sticks. How they a) were able to appreciate what they were seeing and b) were able to keep from falling into a boiling spring and killing themselves is not clear to me.
As far as “selfie culture” goes, I think most of these people believe that a landmark has no significance unless they’re in it somehow. After all, the Grand Canyon is nice, but what really puts it over the top is me in an Hawaiian shirt and flip flops.
R Sherman. We climbed some Mayan ruins this holidays. Their approach to safety railings is Star Wars like. We spent quite a lot of time concerned that some idiot would back over an edge while trying to get a better shot of themselves — with likely fatal results given the steepness.
I have a rule that I never take a photo of anything if everyone else already knows what it looks like. Here’s me in front of Notre Dame Cathedral, the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe. Oh, you’ve already seen both me and all those sites? Is that why your eyes are glazing over?
Feminist art.
Crudeness follows. Read under own risk. Too bad there isn’t a “spoiler” tag available, but given my lack of success with the italics markup….
Hetero-sexual males in the know realize that women in their menses are rather horny (absolutely cannot get pregnant right now) and rather tight. One of my sergeants had stated the same thing somewhat more graphically (believe that or not) when I as a young officer.
The cure for crying toddlers. // Feminist art.
I see what you did there.

I see the Yolocaust site has now removed the juxtapositions of grinning idiots and historical horror. I suppose that’s a sign that its point was made successfully. It was strange, though, trying to imagine what was going through the selfie-takers’ minds. Some of them were using the photos on Tinder and Grindr.
Cow-scratching device surprisingly popular.

Easy money.
Easy money.
I suppose it depends on how sickly the children are and whether they’re fighting one at a time or by the busload.

Comes in handy when viewing that amazing footage of the wailing protestor who got her balloon smacked out of her hand by the cop that hit the net yesterday…
We have two cultures in this country:
The first, which is traditionalist and Apollonian, maintains that it is quiet cool that should be valued.
. . . .
The second culture, which is the new Cult promoted by the Adult Babies and is Dionysian in descent, maintains that performative, operatic displays of emotion indicate “authenticity” — if your emotion is so vehement that you cannot suppress it, your feelings is therefore more “real.”
Of course, a further counter argument offered by the second culture would be that holding it in will cause ulcers and other aggravations, therefore indeed that letting all out is indeed the only viable practice . . . And there is a point to that. Why indeed practice hypocrisy, when the better practice is instead to be matter of factly truthful?
Well, yes, the best practice so outlined is to be utterly matter of factly truthful.
As commented earlier, there is a fellow named Loch Kelly who has written up a rather handy book which more or less amounts to a tech manual for easily achieving and then practicing enlightenment—the actual, full bore Buddhist variety. Or as he comments of the practice, separate yourself from frantically and obsessively ongoing cyclical thought, drop into awake awareness, and then marinate, marinate, marinate, and then marinate some more.
Of that practice and what one encounters in all that marinating, there is a rather interesting comment he makes at one point in the book.
So yes, when some reaction arises, by all means it is indeed totally genuine, absolutely natural, and one’s true nature . . . . for about ninety seconds.
Regarding the erosion of stoicism and self-possession, this may be relevant. Justin Tosi and Brandon Warmke on moral grandstanding and competitive indignation:
It’s an academic paper, and therefore needlessly long, but much of it will be familiar to regulars.
…[[T]herefore indeed that letting all out is indeed the only viable practice…
Fine. That doesn’t mean I should be an unwilling spectator.

Throaty notes.
If you have Amazon Prime I strongly recommend renting Genghis Blues, a documentary about Paul Pena’s trip to Tuva to learn throat singing. What is remarkable is that Tuva is not what one would call accessible, and he did this despite being blind and diabetic and having taught himself Tuvan. Pena became so proficient that he was invited to compete in their annual throat singing symposium, and won.
For those who are unfamiliar with Pena, he is the guy who really wrote Jet Airliner not Steve Miller (who was a very competent blues guy before he went pop).
Fighting Kids
Helpful information.

Echoes of this question.

I’m beginning to think some people have given the joke more thought than is strictly necessary.
And I suppose it might also depend to some extent on whether the diabetes-stricken children were from a leafy and respectable neighbourhood or some quasi-feral council estate.
See, you’ve got me doing it now.
…were from a leafy and respectable neighbourhood or some quasi-feral council estate.
Good point, also depends on how heavily armed they are in the latter case. Though they are probably lousy shots, en-masse pray-and-spray has a quality all its own as any Chicagoan can attest.
In my youth (1950-1970) I was a fervent feminist. During that era, there were many inequalities that did need to be addressed. But, even if it has taken a long time, to a greater or lesser extent most of the disparities have been resolved. (That said, certain historic achievements could still be under threat, even in developed countries like the US and UK.)
Anyway, I now keep my mouth shut about feminism. That label has been appropriated by far too many useless half-wits who use it as a cover for outright lunacy.

Have you seen the state of the Chicago Public School system?

Always reminds me of this guy.
that amazing footage of the wailing protestor who got her balloon smacked out of her hand by the cop that hit the net yesterday…
You mean this footage?
If you look closely the cop hits her with OC as he brings his hand up to knock the balloon away. If you don’t mean this footage, well enjoy it anyway because it’s still funny.

“trumping up: the insistence on the existence of a moral problem where there is none”
Just a guess, but I’m thinking the researchers wish now that they had come up with another term for this phenomenon, or at least capitalized ‘Trump’.
Selfies are the thin end of a very big wedge, tragically – things are going to get very much worse. Thankfully, they’re going to get very much worse for the bastard taking the pictures… http://bit.ly/2fVDi9S

I’m curious, what is the moral end-point of this equality we speak of? Therefore, what is its moral initiative; it’s philosophical basis, and so forth?
“en-masse pray-and-spray has a quality all its own as any Chicagoan can attest.”
Which is why so many black kids end up getting shot in Chicago…
Meanwhile, back at Chia LeBeouf’s vanity project, a glorious moment as Vinnie and his pal weigh in.
Too bad Chia was in the slammer and missed it, somehow I don’t think he would have gotten in these guy’s faces.
So is it fight a child /children who has a diabetes or is it fight a child / children with diabetes i.e. stab them in the pancreas and then feed them candy until they succumb from diabetes?
Seems that the gals on the left are feeling the sting of non-stop mockery and feel the need to enlighten us with the purpose of their protestations on Saturday. Odd that it took nearly a week to figure out. Apparently my lefty, lady, Facebook friends could not manage to sum things up themselves, so they’re all copy and pasting the following:
To those who are confused or surprised about why millions of people showed up to protest Saturday. To those who ask “what is the collective goal?” :
“Women are marching because our children deserve a secretary of education that cares about education.
“Women are marching because our family and friends deserve healthcare. Did you know that before the ACA, newborns in the NICU would hit their lifetime caps on health insurance coverage. That’s right, Babies who had never felt the sun on their skin could no longer get health insurance.
“Women are marching because domestic violence crisis centers and after school programs deserve funding.
“Women are marching because we deserve clean air, clean water, and national parks.
“Women are marching because we believe the children protected by the DREAM act deserve to be here and they deserve to live with their parents, not in orphanages and foster homes.
“And most of all, women are marching because we have the right to. The right to protest and speak out against our government is the first amendment. That’s right, #1! It is one of our most fundamental American rights.
“Saying that we’re whining, throwing temper tantrums, or that we’re immature, or that we need to get over it will not stop us. It will not stop us from fighting for you. And we are fighting for YOU because you deserve these rights too.
“WE ARE NOT MARCHING BECAUSE TRUMP WON!”
“We’re marching because he wants to take all of the things that we hold dear away. All of the things that we’ve been fighting for for generations.
“And we’re not giving up easily.
“Anyone who thinks we’re marching because we lost just simply isn’t listening. We’re fighting because we refuse to lose more.”
********
The portion in all caps is the giveaway, Brair Rabbit.
“I DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT THAT BOY!” said the girl, as truthfully as she could.
As the evangelicals and others of that ilk promote, faith in action.
Or something of that sort.
David? Didn’t you mumble something at some point of doing auditions for the GoE cabaret?
You know…as someone who is on his way this morning to work with some evangelicals who are actually putting their faith in action, not seeing the connection. I don’t always agree with the methods employed, some methods of which I see as counterproductive, but in general, and especially in times of natural disasters and such, evangelicals and similar do a considerable amount of the “action”.
Lennart Nilsson, 1922-2017.
. . . I don’t always agree with the methods employed, some methods of which I see as counterproductive, . . .
Exactly . . . one must always see of the actual results, where a complication keeps being that bit about inflicting faith instead of practicing religion…

Who says Progressivism is all projection and splitting? That it deals in nebulous subjectivities and rhetoric? Who says Progressivism isn’t rigorously intellectual?
evangelicals and similar do a considerable amount of the “action”.
Reason was lost when postmodernism was given equal billing. The pro-life movement loses when it tries to counter the anti-life movement by its own means. This is why protests are bullshit on both sides.
The right lost whole nations by adopting this national “conversation” the left is shrieking about endlessly.
The right is codependent. It refuses to own its property and throw the violent alcoholic out on the street. This will not change.
Not sure what Hal or Ten’s points are but just to clarify, it was not my intention to criticize the God aspect of the evangelicals’ efforts. In fact I believe it is their greater willingness to address the poverty of the soul, as opposed to the materialism of government and other secular organizations, that makes all faith-based actions more intriguing and, from my perspective, more likely to succeed.
My aim wasn’t to cast any negativity on faith-based efforts per se, wtp. It was to severely challenge the notion that any effort should counter utter dysfunction on it’s own playing field. Seeing pro- and anti-life rally crowd sizes compared – not here, elsewhere in the popular press and commentary – is perhaps the most superficial triviality there could be when the aim is ostensibly to end the commercial blight of dismembering the unborn.
In fact, even having pro-life rallies is lunacy. As if a demonstration is what, democratic, a counter-measure, an intellectual stance against a profoundly anti-intellectual amorality, a political force?
…it is their greater willingness to address the poverty of the soul, as opposed to the materialism of government and other secular organizations…
Indeed. The two are as different as – as I believe it’s put in Britain – chalk and cheese. More, actually. It’s not an argument, that. It’s a realization and a horror.

Right. There is faith, and then there is religion which is pretty much the opposite of faith.
So the faithful will argue over what interpretation to ascribe to which lot of random bullshit someone cooked up several centuries back, where each new recruit only shares the same read of whatever the text, or the same text and whatever that new recruit’s read. Or sometimes the text isn’t several centuries old.
Religion, in turn, remains the practice of someone who will just Shut Up, listen, and look for the actual experience—there doesn’t get to be a lot of claims of The Shared Text, but then each individual remains unique.
