“ha ha Jessica Valenti”
It’s the kid I feel for. Sounds like she’s going to grow up totally dysfunctional…
This s a fantastic article on why Brexit and Trump happened.
https://theintercept.com/2016/11/09/democrats-trump-and-the-ongoing-dangerous-refusal-to-learn-the-lesson-of-brexit/
“ha ha Jessica Valenti”
Let’s see, she was born in New York in 1978, so since OCPs were first approved for use in 1960, yes her mother grew up before OCPs were available, but birth control in other forms has not illegal, unless she means her mother was Catholic and the church forbade it, which is hardly the same thing. Regarding the loan, that is a flat out lie other than most teen agers require a parent, which at the time would usually have been the father, to co-sign a loan.
Somehow I doubt the “wrong people” will include Wilson, Roosevelt (FD, not TR), Carter, Clinton, or Obama.
It’s the kid I feel for.
Indeed, a steady diet of bollocks is probably not healthy,
Holy cow – just noticed the article was written by Glenn Greenwald… Jesus! GLENN GREENWALD!
Just shows that the battle between the elites and the ordinary Joe and Jane really has naff all to do with left / right politics.
the cost of bringing the jobs back
The kinds of jobs that the Rust Belt wants back are the kinds that involve digging things out of the ground, which the enviros have ensured CANNOT HAPPEN.
So messing with tariffs and influxes and suchlike isn’t necessary: just dissolve the EPA in an acid bath.
I doubt I’m alone in thinking that the level of outrage we’ve seen today – the indignation, bewilderment and various online meltdowns – implies both parochialism and a sense of entitlement
I don’t think that I have had a more enjoyable day on the internet even though I think Trump is a buffoon.
Bush Derangement Syndrome will seem trivial compared with the Trump Derangement Syndrome that is forming.
just dissolve the EPA in an acid bath
[ Guild of Evil™ supervillain laugh ]
Trumps economic policies are not tommy liking either as mentioned upthread. Interestingly though it seems it was this rhetoric above all else that got him across the line. 2 things really stand out for me:
1. How does a billionaire reality tv celebrity with a gold bathroom who spends a lot of times with models and the elite class tap into middle American concerns in a way that no politician or media pundit who’s entire job is to represent these people have not. Not sure whether it’s that trump is a true genius or that the political establishment has moved so very very far from the people they are supposed to represent.
2. His job rhetoric is ambiguous and I believe deliberately so. I don’t think he will go the tariffs route but I do think he is setting up trading partners for the art of the deal – they need America more than the us needs them. I do think his other economic policies will be far more effective for these people, reducing company taxes, removing green subsidies and barriers, removing regulations and expanding domestic resource extraction will have such a positive effect for all Americans it’s incredible how much the left handicap their own economies.
Maybe wishful thinking but that’s all this was 18 months ago when trump was the only honest republican nominee

Massachusetts secession doomed to failure.
“Almost everyone I know has received some kind of response from the nasty and angry contingent of the internet that hates being told that not everything is about them.”
So this is that ‘projection’ thing I’ve heard so much about.

I’m old enough to remember when Ronald Reagan was elected Governor of California, twice, by large margins. It really was the “Golden State”. Honestly.
Street art of note.
Oh, the usual idiots on social media (Reddit, Facebook, Tumblr, et al) are claiming that since the Hildabeast “won” the popular vote by whopping 0.2%, Trump is “illegitimate” and should not be US President. The fact that states that he’s currently leading, but have not been “declared” or included in the total vote count yet (Michigan and Arizona) doesn’t seem to matter.
Sabo is a genius.
Meanwhile, over on the left, hopes of assassination seem quite popular.
Because they care more than we do.
hopes of assassination seem quite popular.
The chronic masturbators at 4Chan’s /b/ board are (were) taking wagers as to when he will be. Trying to beat Reagan’s “record” for an attempt (69 days) seemed to be the most popular bet.
(Older threads are purged, so no links. Sorry.)
And in the Clown Quarter, things are going pretty much as you’d expect, with various unhappy leftists claiming they speak for “all minorities, women and immigrants,” while denouncing “uneducated whites” as an obvious evil. “I was already terrified of white men,” tweeted one deeply thoughtful educator, adding that there’s not even “a word to describe how scared I am of them now.”
Safe spaces and therapy dogs are of course being provided to traumatised students, whose “emotional distress” has apparently left them unable to study. You see, the election “directly endangers the lives” of all brown and female students.
As we’ve all noticed, yesterday evening a very major occurrence took place in American history, but we’ve yet to see any commentary that I‘m aware of.

Somewhat related, Tim Worstall on the gulf between the PC left and the working class electorate.

I believe you.

He apologizes to her for the fact she’s hysterical and then she threatens to slap him?
It’s what brave little warriors do. Evidently, there’s little point in being gentlemanly towards a “social justice” banshee. In fact, attempts at discussion with such people are probably best avoided. Their ongoing psychodrama will always come first.
I’m gonna slap your fucking face
Notice that this strong feminist resorts to being a damsel in distress when challenged. Also note how she has a bodyguard of white-knights to rush to her rescue.
Rafi
This is what happens when you have a culture of competitive victimhood. We’ve gone, in the West, from a culture of triumphalism, exceptionalism, through meritocracy to victimhood. In the last 30 years we’ve established that top tromp (pardon the pun) is to be the victim. The most victimised wins.
Trump is the first politician to actually just call the media on it.
Interestingly, the rest of the non-Western world doesn’t give a crap about competitive victimhood. They are still stuck in that old-fashioned triumphalism, exceptionalism, or meritocracy stage. How primitive of them!
It makes me snort with laughter when I hear people say that Trump will offend foreign leaders. Imagine being a fly on the wall the Chinese politburo. Do they think for a single second that the Chinese leaders give a nanosecond’s thought to the feelings and concerns of the populations of other countries on their policies. The same for Iran, India, et cetera.
Trump is probably the first president of US in a very long time whose priority will be the United States. It seems to have bypassed most of the people that that is actually the job he was elected to do. He is not elected to be the president of the UN. His entire existence is supposed to be about making life better for people who hold American passports. That’s it.
In absolute terms if he can make America richer by making Europe poorer then that is his job. As ‘unethical’ that may appear to liberal Westerners. That is exactly the calculation that the Chinese, Iranians, Indian, Japanese and Russians make everyday.
“I’m gonna slap your fucking face,” she said, caringly.
Hysteria and threats of slapping aside, what stands out for me is the female student’s evident satisfaction with the notion that “America is an empire that is on its way down,” and that one must simply be resigned to a new order. In which, presumably, people such as herself, with views like her own, are ascendant, then triumphant. As if that scenario were not at all troublesome.
Like so many Clown Quarter inhabitants, the ladies seem unable to imagine that their identity politics, feigned victimhood and endless assertions of moral superiority are not only alienating to most sane people but are also very often insulting. A vast chunk of the electorate is told, repeatedly, that by dint of mere existence they are racist, misogynist, “privileged”; that their values are oppressive, their masculinity is “toxic.” And yet, despite this ostentatious and competitive scolding, our Clownlings struggle to comprehend how their own behaviour, their own vanities, connect with how someone like Trump – yes, Trump – gets elected. (I say struggle, but actually I see little evidence of effort on their part.)
There are plenty of Clownlings insisting that the election result was a “backlash” against “women’s rights and racial progress,” that it’s “all about race,” all about sexism, all about whatever their own identitarian preoccupations happen to be. But if we suppose, just for a moment, that a majority of Americans aren’t in fact seething with race-and-gender animus, and that brown-skinned Trump supporters don’t randomly dislike other brown people too, then there’s an aspect of this that might prove more credible as a basis for voting against Clinton and her ‘progressive’ policies.
Specifically, the question of whether much of the existing electorate feels that it’s expected to just bow out in favour of a more compliant voter base, one imported wholesale by the left precisely because that imported electorate is more likely to be in favour of big government, unsustainable spending and ruinous debt. A new, left-friendly voting block that can always vote itself more of other people’s earnings, as if that were what righteous people do. A prospect that, unsurprisingly and on top of everything else, might prompt much of the existing electorate to say, “Go fuck yourself.”
Oh dear deary me. Aside from enjoying the Schadenfreude of the regular rogue’s gallery of leftist of commentators on my (Australian) ABC in the last 24 hours, and laughing way too loud every five minutes (luckily no one else around to hear me), and watching my FaceBook feed and soaking up the rivers of tears in a handkerchief and squeezing the resultant salty liquid into my martini glass, I am also privileged enough to have this embarrassingly large smorgasbord of links and quotes available right here. I feel so spoiled that I may have to nip out to the vomitorium and come back and begin gorging myself on the feast of the anguish of the left anew. Oh this is so good.
So, out with it WTP, wha’ddya think of Doctor Strange?
Sorry, got real busy with job interviews and such and damn, this place got busy since yesterday. While I greatly appreciated the recommendations, and there definitely were no political distractions and it definitely made election night more tolerable as by the time I got home and turned on the TV the Deplorables were well in the lead…sorcery just isn’t my thing. Perhaps I should have mentioned I’m one of those people who hated Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Batman, Spider-Man (a slight stretch for me), and The Phantom* are probably what I should stick to.
He’s busy having some red velvet curtains made into a cloak. And you should see the bling.
But mine won’t have a mind of its own. Major potential design flaw there. So…you see my problem…
(*For The Ghost Who Walks)
“I’m one of those people who hated Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.”
My lovely, foreign-born wife for whom English is her fourth language is occasionally prone to malapropisms. Some years ago, during one of those tedious faculty cocktail parties, the conversation turned to Ang Lee, during which, she referred to the above as, “Crotchless Tiger . . .”
Of course, that’s a different genre entirely.
Masshole immigrants and their cretinous children are calling for “Calexit” , tho.
I am all for it, California as a state is vastly overrated, other than a nice climate along the coast. The truth is that there is nothing there the rest of the country cannot do without, and the “Calexit” whiners are really only the Bay area, LA, and Sacramento, the rest of the state is relatively sane. Even if the sane ones didn’t exit the Calexit themselves, the whole thing would be another socialist hellhole in short order.
The only downside is having to make the border wall take a northern turn at Yuma, Arizona.
A new, left-friendly voting block that can always vote itself more of other people’s earnings, as if that were what righteous people do.

@ Hal:
Weeeelll, there is Scott Adams since about August of 2015, about when Trump started to surface as a candidate . . .
Well, Adams did manage to predict a Trump victory, so points for that; then again, he was also predicting a Trump landslide, which Tuesday’s result wasn’t really.
In absolute terms if he can make America richer by making Europe poorer then that is his job
Er, no. It isn’t, since trade is mutually beneficial and mercantilism is dribble. The US got very much richer from 1900 to 2000, but it didn’t result in Europe getting poorer. Far from it – we benefited from the goods and services we had to sell far more than we ever profited from being Top Nation globally.
Why would the BBC need to offer ‘Survival Tips’? It’s not like it’s Aleppo. Also, everyone who was still alive post-results has, by definition, survived — without the Beeb’s help.
I do like the turn of phrase of their tame psychiatrist, James Oliver (not to be confused with the psychiatrist Oliver James, nor with the other James Oliver): “Find me a leader who wasn’t a few sandwiches short of a picnic.” Now that does resonate! He goes on to suggest doing whatever relaxes you (yes, sex is officially sanctioned). Best of all is his closing comment: “But what’s going to solve it is truly grasping you’re making a big mistake in having really believed that you know what’s best.” Wow! Kudos for perspicacity. (We’ll just have to overlook the fact that he’s a man and, for all I know, a white one at that.)
Even if the sane ones didn’t exit the Calexit themselves…
As long as they stay away from your state, though, amirite?
in favour of a more compliant voter base, one imported wholesale by the left
Jonathan’s chart of California demographic change is a perfect illustration. The white population has drastically increased since WWII (when the percentage begins its precipitous decline), but has been overwhelmed by massive Hispanic immigration from Mexico – most of it illegal aliens and their automatic-citizen children.
Oh, that’s right, “illegal alien” has been banned from public discourse. Hell, I’m not even sure “undocumented migrant” is still permissible. I guess I’m off to the correction booth, and likely to remain there for some time…
I must have missed the joyous celebrations amongst these womenfolk when Theresa May got appointed PM.
I must have missed the joyous celebrations amongst these womenfolk when Theresa May got appointed PM.
In Canada a woman running for leadership of the Conservative Party, Dr. Kellie Leitch, went public praising Trump’s victory and has called for screening of immigrants for Canadian values.
They’re not happy.
But, Lancastrian Oik if the Left did *any* of that they’d be individualists, instead of collectivists, now wouldn’t they? And, once you place primacy on individual rights and responsibilities, one loses the ability to blame “men” or “whites” for the problems of women and minorities. And, once you’re there, the entire edifice of graft and corruption that undergirds the Left collapses.
Charlie Suet | November 10, 2016 at 16:56
I know, and agree completely. Trade enriches.
The point I was trying (and failing) to make was that even if it didn’t he would still be ‘right’ by the terms of his job to do it. Most people simply do not appear to understand what the President of the United States of America’s job is supposed to be.
It’s to make life better for Americans. Period.
Whatever he does to bring that about, that is not illegal, or breaks existing international treaties, is good for Americans.
It matters not one jot what Italians, Germans, Mexicans, or Guardian readers think about it.
If it comes down to a choice between Americans winning, and somebody else losing, Trump will pick the first choice. It’s a long time since has been a president you could be certain would make that choice. Right or wrong is beside the point. It’s his job.
Well, Adams did manage to predict a Trump victory, so points for that; then again, he was also predicting a Trump landslide, which Tuesday’s result wasn’t really.
Ayup. I was rather preferring to indeed get a genuine margin, from somebody, the better to avoid the numbers of what the UK will keep thrashing through with Brexit. At least with the election, as noted with Brexit, the issue is that an office is about to be empty, someone has to get picked for that office, that pick is done, and happily unlike Brexit, everything is moving forward from there.
Again comparing with Brexit, the closest to a complicating bit is that various reports state that the actual electorate was one half not voting, one quarter for Trump, one quarter for Clinton, some fragments for the others. Trump is in, but that one quarter is not a majority.
. . . of course, to pick out one occurrence that will be just like the first time around, Trump is already getting noted as being a mirror clone of Obama for the ideological fantasists . . . Obama was the conservative winner that the left wing liberals then bitched about, Trump is the conservative winner that the right wing liberals have already been bitching about.
As long as they stay away from your state, though, amirite?
Actually, the sane ones, I couldn’t care less if they moved here, there are quite a few here already who escaped the insanity there. I was, however unartfully, referring to the sane one who want to stay there and form their own state out of northern California counties.
There are those who also advocate for breaking California into six states.
Heh.
. . . and very cute . . .
He’s busy having some red velvet curtains made into a cloak. And you should see the bling

Hi RoG.
Yes, I agree. I think the original poster was writing more in hope than expectation, because the Left are too far down the road with this.
Here is Tim Worstall responding to an Owen Jones piece in The Guardian on a similar point.
As Crowder puts it, people have had enough of being called racist, homophobic, transphobic, etc.
The bit at 2:32 made laugh, but is probably NSFW.

Spiny Norman – Oh, the usual idiots on social media (Reddit, Facebook, Tumblr, et al) are claiming that since the Hildabeast “won” the popular vote by whopping 0.2%, Trump is “illegitimate” and should not be US President.
Yes, I’ve seen a lot of people trying to take comfort in that, throwing that meme at the wall and seeing if it sticks.
(We should keep this at the ready for when Laurie Penny jumps on the bandwagon.)
This is why the Donald, if he’s got half a brain, ought to have the election gone over with a fine-toothed comb for fraud. It was always said that he’d need not only to win, but to win bigger than the margin of fraud and lawfare. The more fraud is proved, the more votes for Hillary are invalidated; he can nip that meme of illegitimacy in the bud.
Not to mention, it ought to be done on its own merits, for the basic reason of justice. With all the good feelings from the schadenfreude, I’m allowing myself some optimism.

the level of outrage we’ve seen today – the indignation, bewilderment and various online meltdowns – implies both parochialism and a sense of entitlement. Which takes us full circle, I think.

What the hell is wrong with these people?
Yes, it’s a strange thing to behold. Though it’s apparently quite fashionable.
I mean, it’s one thing to believe self-flattering lies – that voting for a candidate, and Clinton in particular, somehow makes you virtuous and lofty – but to fabricate non-existent assaults in the service of that narrative, that supposed virtue, thereby wasting police time, and thereby diverting resources from where they may be needed, suggests a deep, possible unfixable, personal pathology.
Tolerant lefties being tolerant
And yet they wonder how he won.
Stuck-Record
Yeah – you make a fair point. I also think Trump’s attitude to Nato – that European’s should stop freeloading and spend some money on their own defence – is reasonable as far as it goes.
Not enthused about a US-China trade war though.
Er, Europeans, obviously
Tim Newman has more:
People who need to imagine themselves as angels, as being righteous and elevated because they’re lefties, will also need to pretend that there are demons everywhere. Their self-imagined virtue depends on it.
Heartless monsters that you are, this one may amuse.
And do scroll down for a further twist.
Though not everyone is seeing the funny side.
Gad Saad on the collective Munchausen bandwagon.
Note there is no attempt to understand the opposition, to reflect on why their labelling everyone with whom they disagreed as a racist, sexist, homophobe, etc. didn’t bring them the electoral success they were so sure of. Instead they’re just repeating what they said throughout the campaign, only now from a losing position.
A friend sent me an image (I’m sure you’ve all seen it} of a map of the USA in which “USA” is indicated by a few blue patches west and east. The remainder of the map is coloured red and labeled “Dumbfuckistan”.
I tried to explain, gently, that in four years’ time, they’ll have to discourage those people in the red regions not to re-elect Trump, and calling them all dumb fucks, uniformly and without qualification, was probably not the best place to start.
Somehow, I don’t think my words were taken with good grace. Ho hum.
Richard Dawkins:
“The two largest nations in the English-speaking world have just suffered catastrophes at the hands of voters — in both cases the uneducated, anti-intellectual portion of voters.”

Nope, doesn’t look like they are learning anything yet.
Vanity trumps realism, for a certain type of person.
Horace, and other people stating similar on FB, inspired me to peruse my FB friends to see how many were one way or the other as to HRC or DJT or Unknown or Third Party declarations. Came up with 49 Trumpers, 21 Clintonians, 67 Undecideds, and 3 Turd Partiers. Also, sadly three were now deceased. So out of 21 Clintonites, I have had a bad friendship experience just one of them, which occurred just this morning. Curious how reflective that might be in general. I’m rather unbalanced 49-21 but in context, that’s less than 5% of my HRC fans.
“suffered catastrophes at the hands of voters”
And as a result, we must temporarily suspend democracy while we sort things out. OK? Now, bend over.
“Turd Partiers”
I don’t want to know what that is.
The Left, who have for more than a century claimed to be championing the rights and dignity of the working classes, once again puts their loathing and sneering contempt for the working classes on public display.
All wondrous to behold, but you know it only really gets going when they turn on their own. And so I give you my favourite:
“You and your friends will die of old age and I’m going to die from climate change. You and your friends let this happen, which is going to cut 40 years off my life expectancy.”

Should I present myself to the ever-lengthening queue to the Correction Booth, or should I just drink another beer and open more popcorn?
Yours, a concerned citizen,
ftumch

Regarding all those precocious, defiantly leftist eight-year-olds we hear so much about, a new term has been coined: Trumphausen by proxy, i.e., “When parents instil in their children irrational fears to garner sympathy and attention for themselves.” Or as Ace puts it, “Your child freaking out over a completely valid election result has nothing to do with me, with ‘hate’, or with America being an awful place. No, it has everything to do with your own emotionally instability and terrible parenting.”
Post election update:
. . . and other notes.
Regarding all those precocious, defiantly leftist eight-year-olds…
Indeed, and note they are all eight year olds, not seven, not nine, every damn one is eight, that is what it makes it so believable, if by “believable” you mean the twitter was given a script.
and note they are all eight year olds, not seven, not nine,
It was a strange thing to watch spread. I’m still trying to process the psychology of it.
And speaking of leftist parenting, here’s a thing to behold.
The tweet about the eight year old comparing Trump to Caesar (I am assuming he means Julius Caesar) reminded me of the Monty Python scene in life of Brian “Alright apart from ….. What have the Romans ever done for us?”
