Disarticulated
Fans of car-crash interviews may enjoy these extracts from the BBC’s Today Programme, in which Ms Malia Bouattia, president of the National Union of Students, shares her deep thinking on the subject of “safe spaces” and campus censorship.
Do stay tuned for her thoughts on the University of Birmingham as “a Zionist outpost.”
Via Julia.
Word salad. I don’t think she knows the meaning of half the words she’s using (randomly).
Word salad.
Yes, almost every sentence seems to disintegrate or explode on the launch pad. Which is curious as Ms Bouattia does a lot of public speaking and this is a subject in which she professes expertise.
Though I suppose that’s the thing about demanding “safe spaces” and banning anyone whose views diverge, even partially, from your own. The resulting echo chamber, with its regurgitation of boilerplate and smug homogeneity, doesn’t really prepare you for even the mildest challenge. Attempts to restrict and prohibit thought rarely lead to sound arguments or a nimbleness of mind.
Early on in the “safe space” bit, she cites the authority of the mob, i.e. “democratic processes,” for the proposition that instituting “safe spaces” and no-platforming are just ducky. Sadly, there was no follow-up question such as, “Well, what if the demos is full of shit?”

Well I’m convinced.

Have we run out of bread and circuses?
Elsewhere, Ms Bouattia has claimed that the creation of censorious “safe spaces” and the banning of non-leftist speakers (or insufficiently leftist speakers) is done in order to “challenge the conditions that currently make voices unequal.” Which is to say, members of Designated Victim Groups are apparently unable to formulate convincing arguments in debate – due to the “physical threat” of hearing different opinions – and therefore, being brown or female or whatever, need special favours from the leftist priesthood. And deference from everyone else.
And all of this “oppression” – whereby “marginalised students” are denied “the comfort to speak” and are “being kept silent” – is supposedly taking place in some of the most coddling and indulgent environments on Earth, where political correctness is an institutional default, where women outnumber men, and where the pretence of victimhood, however absurd, is a ticket to both status and preferential treatment.
AS good as the Decca Aitkenhead interview with her the Graun published last week, where Aitkenhead ended up shouting at her. Not to labour the point, but when you’re so far out you’re winding up a crazy lefty like Aitkenhead, you must be orbiting Pluto.

Bouattia thinks the real reason for all the animosity is not antisemitism, but the radicalism of her leftwing politics.
Ah, of course. It’s not the insane conspiracy theories, the totalitarian impulses, the pretentious victimhood, the preposterous sense of entitlement or the endless self-flattery. It’s because she’s so radical and edgy.

Have we run out of bread and circuses?
Well, these days, with advances in processing and creation, anybody can pretty much be observed to be given and have anything—often, therefore, all further acquisitions require that the individual thus do the work of one’s own self refinement and growth.
Noting that, these days, hipsters demanding The Shiny Thing have become the bread and circuses . . . . . Yes, one gets utterly bottom grade B&C, but that’s what comes of hipsters.
Bouattia thinks the real reason for all the animosity is not antisemitism, but the radicalism of her leftwing politics.
She’s nearly 30 and never had a job outside student politics.
She’s nearly 30 and never had a job outside student politics.
Well, if you’ve pissed away your educational opportunities on joke degrees – in “cultural studies” and “postcolonial theory” – I should imagine real-world employment options are somewhat limited.
. . . anybody can pretty much be observed to be given and have anything . . .
. . . and I was trying to remember what I’d read recently that was basically an echo, and finally chased it down as Theodore Dalrymple’s Life At The Bottom, which I did get to after Darleen’s comment the other day . . .
And, therefore, the trap of the hipster—working class hipster or middle class hipster and both being the underclass—is that all the hipsters have all the bread that they can eat and get fat from or demand a gluten free substitute of, and they have all the futility show or yoga class circuses that they can watch or be seen attending.
—And thus the only thing left for the hipster is to voluntarily stay trapped as a hipster or join us as an adult, even as we adults keep having to herd the hipsters.—yes, toddlers are usually only about two feet tall, and the hipster variety does tend to be taller than that.
So, again, —often, therefore, all further acquisitions require that the individual thus do the work of one’s own self refinement and growth.
After all, The individual can and does get out of this gutter, the Actions and Indicators and Behavior do not.
She really is the gift that keeps on giving – to political satirists at least: http://bit.ly/2cQt37l Ouch.
Oh, yes, this being David’s personal Arena, one must remember to at least occasionally lob in the particularly appropriate reference.
The resulting echo chamber, with its regurgitation of boilerplate and smug homogeneity, doesn’t really prepare you for even the mildest challenge. Attempts to restrict and prohibit thought rarely lead to sound arguments or a nimbleness of mind.
Yeah, hipsters just hate it when the Enterprise decloaks during a particularly easy attack on an unarmed hospital ship . . . . !
Bouattia in The Guardian:
” … We can’t come to the table trying to compromise any more … “
Bouattia in the BBC interview:
“Naturally, we support – the thing about safe spaces [is] an application of democratic processes […] We’re not stopping the tearing apart of problematic views [ … ] What I support is people’s democratic right to apply what they need to facilitate engagement and inclusion […] in whichever way students democratically interpret [it]”
I gather she’s been using the DPRK dictionary definition of ‘democracy’.
Oh, would you look at that!
I’ve spilled damn italicisation all down the new thread.
Ahem.
When using pronouns, be sure to consult with the Pronoun Committee first.
I swear, we are living in Crazy Years
Luckily I am not in a profession (or a country) in which I would ever have to consider the CV of someone with a Studies-studies degree, but if I were, it would be a massive red flag and would result in the immediate filing of the CV in the round cabinet on the floor.
Given the ongoing conversion of STEM to STEAM,can “engineering studies” and “biology studies” graduates be long in coming to a job interview near you?
Same curriculum for each, mind you.
Oops.
@Hopp Singg, luckily my profession requires a minimum of technical content in the degree program. Biology is as about low as it gets, and a biologist would have to absolutely shine in mechanics at interview, or go find a firm that deals with biotech stuff. We’re talking brassoed to within an inch of his or her life here, and I’d be highly skeptical that they wouldn’t just bog off to biotech after a couple of years.
Oops.
Brilliant! His Royal Highness would be a good one, too.
His Majesty, Grant Strobl
I would have gone with Master to better reinforce my white male privilege and encourage the remembrance and celebration of colonial oppression perpetrated, at all times and in all ways, on the rest of the world by my race.
It really is the best way to keep the help in their place.
Early history.
Student officially changes his personal pronoun to ‘His Majesty’ on campus roster.
I like that. Although my invoice will be in the post:

Um. Speaking of situational train wrecks . . .
Her well-publicised racist meltdown had fellow Labour supporters begging her to stop. Your correspondent was unsure if the account was a parody. It appears not to be.
In other news, and noting an example of Daesh indeed being Islamist lunatics instead of Muslims, a 39 year old grandmother has turned up in the Google World news feed, instead of just local news.
No, she’s not known for her tea parties. And she has her own militia.
O/T, Darleen, what happened to Jeff at ProteinWisdom.com?
