Then She Set Off the Jollity Klaxon
Meanwhile, in where-to-go-on-that-foreign-holiday news:
One of the most senior members of the Turkish government sparked an outcry on Tuesday, after declaring that women should not laugh loudly in public. The deputy prime minister, Bülent Arinc, one of the co-founders of the ruling Islamic Justice and Development party (AKP), made the comment while lamenting the moral decline of modern society. “A man should be moral but women should be moral as well, they should know what is decent and what is not decent,” Arinc said in a speech on Monday, in the western Bursa region for the Bayram holiday that marks the end of Ramadan. “She should not laugh loudly in front of all the world and should preserve her decency at all times,” he added.
Mr Arinc also shares his wisdom on other matters.
He denounced the excessive use of cars, saying that if even the “river Nile was filled with petrol” there wouldn’t be enough to go around. Arinc also slammed the excessive use of mobile phones in Turkish society, with women “spending hours on the phone to swap recipes.”
An equally pious Guardian reader adds this,
Right up there with… keeping [women] barefoot and pregnant, oh wait, that’s only in America.
Any forcibly barefoot American women are welcome to respond.

But think how boring dinner would be.
Hrrrumph
‘Any forcibly barefoot American women are welcome to respond’.
The US military also test-fire their weapons using orphaned children as targets. Fact.
Here’s one for Mr Arinc

Wishful thinking (and what a peculiar thing to wish for).
My dear Sackcloth, you are unfair to the US military. They use the orphans only as moving targets, so they have some chance of escape.
Blind orphans, obviously.
Hang on – last I heard female genital mutilation was beyond reproach, and now the Guardianistas turn on a fellow who’s darker skinned than they (in general) are because of laughter, even though he takes the Party line on restricting auto use?
I think things have advanced to the point that simply stating A man should be moral but women should be moral as well, without any examples of moral behavior, would guarantee electoral loss in most English speaking jurisdictions.
No, no, no…blind Muslim orphans!
blind gay baby Muslim orphans.
If a woman properly covers her face, she can go round grinning liked a deranged monkey under her veil. No happiness visible. Problem solved.
… declaring that women should not laugh loudly in public … lamenting the moral decline of modern society … the excessive use of cars …the excessive use of mobile phones in Turkish society, with women “spending hours on the phone to swap recipes.”
Is this guy Turkey’s answer to Victor Meldrew, or what?
Right up there with… keeping [women] barefoot and pregnant, oh wait, that’s only in America.
Proof if proof were needed that refusing to get your news from anything other than ‘approved’ sources leads to the most eccentric views …
. . . blind gay baby Muslim orphans.
Oh, no, no, no. We must be properly correct and traditional about this.
Left handed and redheaded, blind gay baby Muslim orphans.
I’m an American woman, sitting barefoot before this very computer.
I’ve never been pregnant, I hire people to clean my kitchen, and the last thing I properly cooked was a fistful of green beans from the vines I’m growing.
Microwaved ’em, too, not steamed in a fancy silicone colander over a mesquite hibachi.
Note to dicentra: Mesquite hibachis tend to be a ‘single use’ kind of thing. Mine is made of Delft porcelain.

Men invented the pub. Men went there to get away from the cackling of their women. Pubs now actually allow women in unaccompanied or even accompanied by more women. Is nothing sacred any more?
