- You Can't Afford My Radical Life
That was just cruel. The day’s ruined now.
Forget killing Hitler, this is why we need a time machine.
And photos like those – say, #4, 8 and 10 – were still to be found in some barber’s shops well into the Eighties.
I’ve been re-watching episodes of the detective series Cracker, which I first saw in the mid-Nineties. Some of the stories are still good, but, dear God, they look old. The fashions, and mid-Nineties Manchester in general, look more like the early 1980s.
Thanks for not adding a disco soundtrack to that site.
I am protected by the Personal Data Protection Act. They do not have my permission to use my picture.
That guy will be hearing from my lawyer.
Third from the left, third row down. Long curls and trimmed beard. That was me in the 1980s.
Number 2 – Evil Steve Carell
Number 4 – The Aunt Janice
Number 5 – The Amish
Number 6 – Does this taste like rohypnol?
Number 11 – Soul Glo
Number 15 – Brideshead Reloaded
Soul Glo.
Yeah, that one. I didn’t have the “wet look” and my hair is sandy blond, so not an early Samuel L. Jackson look for me. Something more like Charlie Daniels.
I see these every day . . . .
*laughs*
*weeps*
*laughs*
Spiny – in 1987 I had a bleached blond haircut inspired by Iceman from Top Gun and Ivan Drago from Rocky IV. It was a different time, a time when a man could sport a flat top or a mullet or even a perm without being ironical. A time when you could look like a disgraced geography teacher and still be a rock star.
Truly, we 80s survivors are the greatest generation.
The capsule biographies below are outstanding. It’s hard to say which of these hairstyles is the most horrifying; they are all deeply unsettling in their own way.

It’s okay, guys. You’re among friends. This is a safe space. Let it out.
Is there a mirror somewhere?
Looks blocked or borked now.
Well, as of this moment it’s still up.
Heh.
I’ll admit this, David, I was actually trying for the Rock Star / Country-Western singer look. Silly as it seems today, in the rather rural, “tourist town” part of California I lived in at the time, it was fairly successful in attracting the ladies… although very rarely the ones I was trying to attract. Dammit.
(By the 1990s, when I had moved to San Diego, the style was attracting more middle-aged men than young women, so a more clean-up look was in order. I kept the beard, though.)

Snort.
Isn’t that George Best in the top row?
And with complete lack of any surprise, we have example number 12 . . . . .
Yes, I did see number 13, but that hair by Exxon is effluvia from the Nineteen Empties reaching back to the ‘Fifties, and not from the ‘Seventies . . . .
I believe you’re right there, Hal. “I spent a lot of money on booze, birds, and fast cars. The reset I just squandered.” Haircuts must have been part of the squandered part.
Eh…that should be “I believe you’re right there, Mr. Meredith”…but who’s counting?
