Friday Ephemeraren’t
Thanks to various chores and social obligations, I haven’t had time to compile the usual batch of findings for the weekend. But by all means throw together your own pile of links and oddities in the comments. I’ll set the ball rolling with a reinvented wheel; an island in a lake on an island in a lake on an island; some black and white sea life; our betters at work; and a chap doing this better than you.
Oh, and via Dicentra, a perennial parenting dilemma.

Heh. As one of the Quillette commenters says, “Many of the protesters appear to be living in an orthogonal reality to ours, and to have no interest in having their misunderstandings corrected.” I think that’s pretty much the nuts of it. Their self-flattering psychodrama demands monsters, and so they see monsters.

Oh, silliness or worse about the Ninth Symphony is hardly new. Who can forget this 1987 outpouring of the “New Musicology” (by”>https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Susan_McClary”>by one Susan McClary)?
“The point of recapitulation in the first movement of the Ninth is one of the most horrifying moments in music, as the carefully prepared cadence is frustrated, damming up energy which finally explodes in the throttling murderous rage of a rapist incapable of attaining release.”

A number of years ago, I had reason to do some business with a brewery in New Ulm, Minnesota. At the time, the town had been featured on a silly list of “least diverse towns in America,” and so I gave them a bit of ribbing over the honor.
To his credit, the brewery rep didn’t miss a beat. He replied, “Actually, we prefer the terminology ‘most pure.’ ”

We got to talking and she related her recent trip to Germany to visit relatives. Turns out her grandfather was stationed in Germany shortly after the war and had married a German woman. After inquiring as to what her gram’s maiden name was I realized weez cousins…OK, maybe not close cousins because Schmidt…but hey.

“The Absurdity of Trump Officials Eating at Mexican Restaurants During an Immigration Crisis,” says Ms Rosner’s headline. Gosh, how very dare they. I stopped counting the misleading statements and glaring factual errors after half a dozen. Then of course there’s the absurdity of an article about lawbreaking – illegal immigration – not once using the word illegal or criminal or making any reference whatsoever to the violation of the law, which is the root of the entire issue.
Journalism, baby.

I’m betting I know ten times more about Mexico than the rabble rousers who call me racist, since I have a long-standing interest in its history and have taken the expense to visit it (not cheap from NZ).
It’s intriguing being racist about a country you really like!
Are closed border people allowed to eat Mexican if they visit Mexico?
In her tweets, Ms Rosner deems it “hypocritical” for a member of the Trump administration, and by extension any Republican, to eat Mexican food while, elsewhere, the law is being enforced, albeit belatedly and inadequately. Only she carefully avoids mentioning that any laws are being broken, as that might cast doubt on her own self-satisfied assumptions. It’s quite a mental tangle, but judging by the number of approving retweets, terribly fashionable.
In her tweets, Ms Rosner deems it “hypocritical” for a member of the Trump administration, and by extension any Republican, to eat Mexican food…
She also is implying that all Mexican restaurants are owned and staffed by illegal aliens and not by a) legal immigrants who often resent the illegals, b) genuine American born Americans of Mexican descent who often resent the illegals, c) people of any other ethnic background who have culturally appropriated Mexican food because they like it, and like to prepare it, and finally, d) all people of any background other than vaguely pasty European are democrats or other assorted leftist ilk and therefore hate anyone to the right of Nikolai Bukharin as much as she does.
She also is implying that all Mexican restaurants are owned and staffed by illegal aliens and not by a) legal immigrants who often resent the illegals…
Heh. Quite.
It’s an odd thing, to realise that not only is it possible to write an article about illegal immigration without even once acknowledging the issue of legality and lawbreaking, on which everything else depends, but also that in many circles, including much of the media, this is how one is expected to write or talk about it.

Menstrual products ARE expensive, although I know pads are much cheaper than tampons, or they were when I was using them. They are also much safer. Are pads still available in the UK?
A VAT is a sales tax, right? Some U. S. states exempt food from sales tax. I’’d like to see medical supplies exempted from sales taxes. Whether menstrual products are “medical supplies” would be a contentious question, but lawyers gotta eat too!
…period poverty…
OK, she claims it costs on average £500/year, divide by 12 = £41.66/month. 72 count box of Tampax from Amazon UK is £11.36. As that comes out £30.30 less, and given any woman using 72 in one month needs a gynecologist (and a transfusion) instead of menstrual products, I think the Labor MP needs a laxative as much, or more, as the aforementioned products.

The VAT, as I understand it, is a tax that gets added at each stage of production. Me, I’d much rather a simple sales tax on the retail sale of all new goods, including food and medicine. Don’t want to pay the tax? Buy used when you can, buy in bulk when used isn’t an option, and don’t buy what you don’t need. Abolish all other domestic taxes (I’d be ok with a tariff on top of the sales tax as long as it wasn’t exorbitant…maybe 5%).

Technically, at least in FL, sales taxes are supposed to be applied to used goods as well. Individuals don’t get hassled about it, generally speaking, but commercial entities are required to collect sales taxes.
Meant to add that I agree on the tax thing. In general tax in one place in one grand fashion such that you minimize the opportunities to cheat, including legal “exceptions”, etc. It’s a huge misconception that a tax applied in one place does not get passed on to the rest of the economy. For example real estate taxes are not taxes on those who OWN property. Those taxes get passed on to renters as higher rent, or if a commercial establishment, that higher rent gets distributed to the consumers of those businesses in the form of higher prices.
Bah! My 12:49 post, “commercial entities are required to collect sales taxes on sales of used goods”

It must be quite odd for them, to go through life trying so hard, and failing so often, to conceal how unearned their pieties are.
Jabrwok: the tax is only added *on top* at each stage.
Producer A buys the raw material and “pays” vat. But when they sell to distributor B they claim it back. B “pays” it on the purchase, but claims it back when they sell to retailer C. Likewise C pays, but recalls. The buyer pays the whole amount.
If done properly it is a simple tax with few overheads and very simple for businesses to account for. Every sale is taxed, every purchase you claim it back on.
The trick, like any tax is to have NO exceptions on a flat rate. Every exception and different rate makes work for all concerned.
British VAT is a Byzantine system that is a pain to manage. NZ VAT is a simple and easy to manage system, with property (rent, mortgages etc) being the only exception.

Nooo! Nonononono. You know the one. The one…”la-da-da-deee, la-da-da-da-da-deee… True patriot love, unto our sons command”…I think the fourth verse has something about ho-ho-ho and mistletoe, but nobody really ever sings that part.
at least in FL, sales taxes are supposed to be applied to used goods as well.
Hence my “all new goods” caveat. I figure if you’re selling something used, that sales tax has already been paid on it, and used-goods retailers tend to be small businesses which can ill afford more bureaucratic red tape.
Re: VAT. Not sure what you (Chester) mean by “claim[s] it back”. Does that mean “passes the cost of the already paid tax along to the consumer while adding a new layer of VAT to the item”? If so, that sounds like it would incentivize minimizing the number of transactions between initial materials supplier and final retail sale. The longer the production chain, the higher the price. Or I could be misunderstanding it all:-).
As for taxes on rents, that seems silly. The rent is a *service*, not a good. I realize that there’s nothing that can’t be taxed, but in my perfect world only goods would be taxed. The important services are already expensive enough without adding to their costs.
But I’m not yet God Emperor, so my opinion is worth exactly what you’re paying for it. Tax free though!
Ah, yes you were speaking your conceptual context. My mistake.

Jabrwok, no, the first manufacturer charges the next person $100 say, plus GST of 15% so price is $115.that buyer marked it up to, say, $200 and sells to buyer C for $200 plus 15% so 230. The original seller pays $15 but has of course charged the buyer the same so no net tax. The first buyer pays $30 – $15 = $15, but has passed this and the $15 already contributed by the first seller onto C.
And so on to the final consumer. As there are no exemptions other than rent, interest charges and on exports, the process isn’t too tricky. All transactions have GST added and one forwards the net position monthly (usually). Under a certain turnover level one does not have to charge or pay GST, but you can’t then deduct GST inputs.
It raises price levels, but is quite resistant to avoidance. Cash jobs can avoid it, but once purchased goods are involved it becomes less of an issue because your input GST not being deducted becomes a counterweight.
Not perfect, but usually a lot better than a sales tax. Note the important point though, make it universal on a single rate with very limited exemptions.
