Because some things bear repeating, a few items from the archives:
When your status depends on being impossible to please.
We’re told that being a “coloured” or “Indigenous” writer is fraught with “structural oppression,” on account of being “marginalised” – as when being invited to literary award parties and then swooned over by pretentious pale-skinned lefties.
“Whiteness” and “white men” are particular burdens to Ms Whittaker and her peers, whose suffering – their “collective plight” – is seemingly endless and endlessly fascinating, at least among those for whom such woes are currency.
As Ms Whittaker’s world is one of practised self-involvement, her point is at times unobvious. However, our unhappy poet appears to be annoyed both by “underwhelming responses” to her own writing and by insufficiently convincing displays of approval. All that “endless patronising praise.”
At which point, the words high maintenance spring to mind.
Such is the world of identity politics and playing Browner Than Thou. And if you base your written output and literary persona, and your claim of artistic importance, on being Brown And Therefore Fascinating™ – or as Ms Whittaker puts it, “Blak literature” by “Indigenous creatives” – this will happen.
To complain about pretension – “white fawning” – while in the very same paragraph demanding race-fixated, self-agonised appraisals – “criticism that is responsible for the race of its giver” – is incoherent and faintly ludicrous.
To bemoan woke piety as insincere and unsatisfying, which it is by definition, while simultaneously milking it for all it’s worth and encouraging those same pretensions, is unlikely to evoke much in the way of sympathy.
At least not sympathy that’s sincere.
On supposedly racist traffic cameras. Convolutions ensue.
Nor, it seems, was there room to consider the possible effect of endless, widespread excuse-making for antisocial behaviour, and its role in making such behaviour more likely, not less.
It seems we’re supposed to believe – emphatically and indignantly – that Mr Perry and Mr Olatunji Oboi Reed, our candidates for victimhood, are being induced to break the law and to drive in ways that are dangerous to others, including repeatedly running red lights, because of “fewer pedestrians and more vacant lots.”
Cyclists and dog walkers are also invoked as possible factors, along with the claim that a black person may have to drive to the nearest grocery store, a feat rarely undertaken by people of pallor, obviously.
And all of this is presented as if the gentlemen’s behaviour, their choices, could only have external causes. Other variables apparently being unworthy of consideration.
And so, Mr Reed, an “activist for racial equity,” expects city officials to “eliminate any racial… disparities in camera ticketing,” while avoiding any mention whatsoever of behaviour and personal responsibility. “The root cause of traffic violence in our society that is disproportionately impacting Black and brown people is structural racism,” says he.
As a result, the default narrative, the woke conceit, is just a little odd. Namely, if black people are being injured or killed as a result of reckless driving, very often by other black people, this is “traffic violence” and “structural racism.” But attempts to enforce the law and reduce the number of such incidents are also “structural racism” and must therefore be done away with.
Our Betters Victorious, And Still Unhappy.
On the not-at-all-spiteful psychology of the well-heeled progressive woman.
Exactly how Ms Heffernan’s neighbours were being aggressive is unclear, but it seems that we, the reader, are expected to dislike them, quite intensely, on account of their being insufficiently leftist.
As readers may be a little confused by the air of displeasure, I should point out that no history of neighbourly rancour is offered as an excuse – no disputes over hedges or noisy pets. Nothing of that sort is mentioned at all. Ms Heffernan’s neighbours are, it seems, to be frowned upon, indeed despised, in print, in a newspaper they may well read, simply for failing to vote for Mr Biden.
When They Won’t Keep On Saying Just How Special You Are.
On “non-binary” motherhood and making others mouth absurdities.
You don’t get to control how others perceive you. Emotional blackmail based on demands that others must use fabulist pronouns, even out of earshot, will not change that fact. It may, however, make you look obnoxious and deranged.
‘Every time you refer to me, whether I’m present or not, you first have to clap your hands three times.’
Same vibe.
Even if it were the case that Ms Meghan feels “misgendered” – which would be assuming quite a lot – she has not in fact been “misgendered” by use of the words she and her, or by any recognition of the fact that she’s obviously a woman. She has been referred to accurately, in accord with physical reality. Her mental health problems – any feelings of being “misgendered” – are not the arbiter of what is.
We can see what is.
For those craving more, this is a pretty good place to start.
Consider this an open thread. Share ye links and bicker.

She’d be happier if she didn’t hang out with lefties.
Heh. I suspect she’d have to endure much less pretentious racial fawning. Though I’m guessing she’d also sell fewer books of her terrible poetry.
If you squint and tilt your head, you might almost feel sympathy for Ms Whitakker. I mean, if you’re not overly gifted with talent and instead you’ve bet the farm on being pointedly “Indigenous” and “Blak,” and ideologically brown, then you’re going to be spending a lot of time with pretentious lefties.
Which, granted, is likely to get on your nerves. But that’s the demographic she’s chosen to exploit. That’s her schtick.
Suicide by welfare.
This chubby little Quebecois king is blowing up my algorithm and I for one appreciate the wholesome sweetness as he sings about a quack doctor cutting off parts of people’s bodies.
Is there another kind?
I’m not seeing a lot of options on that front. Without the pretension and racial fawning, Ms Whittaker wouldn’t have an audience to speak of. I very much doubt anyone else would be falling over themselves to give her awards, while hailing her clumsy, charmless prattle as “powerful” or whatever.
For instance.
Again, if your experience of white people is based largely on encounters with insufferably pretentious middle-class lefties – which is to say, middle-class lefties – then one can understand a certain disaffection.
She’s still a shit poet, mind.
High maintenance devices get discarded. Perhaps if she be happier if she discarded herself to a reservation where she’d never again see or hear a white person.
As do the words f— off.
Poorer too.
Well, it’s a bit rich to be expected to sit there, being scolded for being white by a talentless aboriginal bint, supposedly a poet, who bangs on artlessly about how awful it is that white people arrived and built a civilisation, where her own ancestors had failed. For such a long, long time.
And to then be expected to applaud one’s own scolding by said bint.

I’m generally one for being polite, but the endless racial grifting does get a tad wearying and human patience is, after all, finite.
I mean, she could save us all a lot of time by writing, “Thank you for bringing us dentistry, agriculture, metalworking, infrastructure, literacy, the wheel, medicines that actually work – oh, and a non-Stone-Age life expectancy.”
Something along those lines.

I think it was “livestream the collar explosions” that won me over.
I didn’t find it all that ‘blood thirsty’. Harsh? Yes, definitely. Some punishments are things we’re not used to in “modern times” in western society but certainly have existed in the past ,,, e,g, think immediate hanging of horse thieves when caught.

Setting aside the technological aspects, the punishments are very much in line with historical practices.
The “Household Accountability Act” could be passed right now. There’s no moral or legal barrier to it.
Although as David has pointed out repeatedly, simply permanently incarcerating the relatively small number of recidivists knocks violent crime down by huge margins.
No, you can’t have context.
Should development be farmed out to the Mossad?

Not sure any is needed.
To hell with wrestling these animals. It should be legal and customary to quickly resort to billy clubs. And when those are insufficient, just shoot them.
Is that list of charges for the perp or the Good Samaritans?
Do cops in the US not carry tonfa any more? They used to.
Damned if I know. I’m sure it varies by jurisdiction. But the law needs to change to allow cops to more quickly resort to such means.
Haven’t been paying much attention but I’d bet the gadgeteers got hold of the ones in charge of procurement – a length of seasoned wood doesn’t require much in the way of supplies like, say, a taser or pepper spray.
If CA did one thing right, it was our Three Strikes law that extended the sentences of career criminals … 3rd strike it was 25 to life.
Of course, the ink wasn’t dry when the usual suspects started attacking it with all sorts of supposed “miscarriages of justice” in trying to undo the law. They didn’t care that it did have a big impact on normie society as the worst people were locked away.
If any of you remember the supposed case of a guy sentenced 25 to life because “he just stole a piece of pizza”, I’m sure you’d be stunned and surprised that wasn’t what really happened at all.
And as 3-strikes was weakened and more criminals NOT convicted under it, surprise surprise, crime went up (also tied to other pro-criminal laws)
Should have locked up all the leftists, too.
“Leftists aren’t people, Charlie Brown”.

Exactly how long had Ms Whittaker’s ancestors failed to build a civilization Down Under? Perhaps as long as 60,000 years. Perhaps if we had left them alone a bit longer…

In case anyone missed just how “Blak” Ms Whittaker is.
This mysterious ebony being.
I’m still processing the idea, advanced by Ms Whittaker, that reviewers of her poetry should not be white or male. “Whiteness” being a contaminant of some kind. And that any white reviewer, should one be permitted, must first be suitably agonised and racially neurotic – offering only “criticism that is responsible for the race of its giver.”
Readers are invited to speculate as to whether a white woman insisting that her poetry should only be reviewed by white people would receive similar affirmation in the pages of the Guardian, or at literary award parties.
