Consider that the Somalis were chosen to be the first link in the fraud chain because Somalia has that hawala system, which involves satchels full of cash money being carried out of the country by couriers. They’re waved through security at airports because “everybody knows” what they’re doing.
How hard would it be to take some of those federal dollars the Somalis (and probably others) fraudulently obtain, walk it out of the country with a fake hawala courier, and then launder it back into the U.S., where it lands in party coffers?
I’ve seen estimates that close to 40% of all web traffic (HTTPS requests) is now in the form of malicious bots.
Since moving the blog in late 2022, over 40,000 malicious login attempts have been blocked. So far this month, in January alone, 3,523 attempts at spamming have been blocked and I expect much the same next month.
In the background, unseen, there’s an ongoing robotic war. Security and keeping this place free of adverts for implausible ways to earn $25,000 a month is a non-trivial overhead. Hence the tip jar, of course.
The days when you could do this, this here, for a few quid a month are long gone.

Canadians here will remember The Frantics and The Red Green Show, but in between Rick Green had an SF-focused media review show called Prisoners of Gravity. In one episode he covered ESR and the rise of open source, using clips from an interview. In the clip, ESR starts by decrying Communism and its evils. Later, when asked how programmers were expected to make money if they gave all their work away for free, he opined that perhaps programmers could be paid by the government to produce software for the public good.
At which point Green looked pointedly at the camera and said “I don’t know, Eric, sounds like Communism to me.”

You do have to marvel at the terribly progressive implication that a high-trust society can somehow be maintained by not caring about the growing numbers of people who repeatedly and often audaciously violate that trust. And by making unconvincing excuses for the people who keep on doing the violating.
As if pretending not to mind the abuse of civilised standards – and pretending not to mind being screwed over or robbed or preyed upon or alienated by the general level of brutishness and predation – somehow means it isn’t there and didn’t happen. And won’t happen tomorrow and the day after. Only with greater boldness.
As if high-trust means letting abusive, thieving, antisocial fuckers act with impunity.
In a low-trust society, every transaction is fraught. The merchant keeps goods safely behind the counter and gets them for you when paid. In a high trust society you can fill your cart with goods and do self-checkout, which is faster and cheaper. Hiring is easier and more reliable in a high trust society. etc.
So the high trust society has profitability/wealth that is only possible if it stays high trust, if you can count on people to pay the token for the train and not shoplift.

I will admit I’m routinely surprised when extremely local Canadian comedy becomes popular south of the border, mostly because how in the hell did you people even discover this stuff? Letterkenny was on YouTube, but it was hard as hell just finding a cassette tape of The Frantics in the 1980s and I live here.

I’ve phrased that in an unkind way, and I think the commenter has a point, but there is more going on than that. For instance, I have close relatives who went to the same public schools as I did, encountered the same mix of assholes, punks, thugs, and hood rats, and yet they drank the entire jug of “woke” DEI Kool-ade.
The Red Green Show has been on American public TV stations since “forever”. I heard of it from PBS addicts.

This is it. It’s like the joke about I left my bicycle leaning against a lamppost and when I came back it was still there – the bike? – no the lamppost. Minnesotans leave their doors unlocked, or at least leave their social amenities without barriers to entry – so it’s still a high-trust Scandinavian society where people are predisposed not to steal and the law can take a light touch because freeloading is sufficiently punished informally? – no, everything is stolen, freeloading is blatant, and our lives, or your lives at least, are made worse. But we’re informed that Our Values of high trust are still there.
Rightists talk about high trust, when all they mean is that a prerequisite to have pleasant lives for themselves and their children is to be allowed to associate with the trustworthy, to exclude the untrustworthy, and not to be imposed upon about their reasons for discriminating. Leftists make the true commitment, or make you make the true commitment, to high trust by forcing rightists, and whites in general, to associate with the untrustworthy too.
