Will Gu on the deep and worldly wisdom on offer at Scripps College:
The college will be hosting two Venezuelan officials next week at a three-day speaker series praising the “grassroots initiatives” of the country’s totalitarian government. The officials, Venezuelan Consul-Generals Antonio Cordero and Jesús Chucho García, will be speaking to students on “African solidarities,” “coups and imperial wars,” and the country’s vision for “a new society rooted in political participation, communal economies and democracy.” The description adds that the event is “for all who are interested in economics that serve people not profits.” Venezuela is still facing mass food shortages as a result of its government’s economic illiteracy. People in Venezuela have lost an average of 19 pounds from recent food shortages… The event description does not mention whether the two Venezuelan officials will discuss their country’s rampant corruption problem, the government’s dire financial situation, or the rapid devaluation of Venezuela’s currency to the extent that the government cannot afford to pay for money printing services.

Cathy Young on debate and its enemies:
When about 30% of college students favour censorship, it should be a cause for alarm — especially because that’s up from 22% two years ago. Moreover, 53% of students believe “promoting an inclusive society” is a higher priority than protecting free speech rights. Over a third say it is sometimes acceptable to shout a speaker down, and one in 10 approve of violent disruption. The last figure may seem small, but it means some 2 million collegians in the United States believe it can be okay to use violence to stop speech they don’t like. That’s not good news.
Gail Heriot on racial discipline quotas and perverse media narratives:
A Government Accountability Office report finds that boys are disciplined more often than girls in school. It also finds that African-American students are disciplined more often than white students and that whites are disciplined at higher rates than Asian Americans. Of course, the New York Times covers it with an utterly misleading headline “Government Watchdog Finds Racial Bias in School Discipline.” Here’s what the NYT didn’t say: Just a few days ago, another government report showed that African-American students self-report that they have been in a physical fight on school property at a rate more than twice the white rate. Overwhelmingly, the aggregate disparities in school discipline are the result of differing rates of misbehaviour, not bias.
And Heather Mac Donald on the same.
Readers unfamiliar with the consequences of ‘progressive’ racial discipline quotas should take a look at this item here, and also this one. Both offer vivid illustrations of leftist psychology given power – and by vivid I mean ludicrous and horrifying. Such that the groping and choking of teachers and the setting afire of students’ hair are excused on grounds that “African-American boys” are more “physical” and “demonstrative.” Amid the inevitable chaos and degeneracy – including a dramatic fall in maths and reading scores, and a rapid rise in assaults and classroom thuggery, up to and including actual riots – amid all this, critics of the policy are smeared as racists, while “white privilege” guilt hustling is made mandatory. And while terrified teaching staff console themselves with free emergency whistles.
As usual, feel free to share your own links and snippets, on any subject, in the comments.

In a country of starving people, that may be more accurate than they think.
I’ve an idea for the posters.

What?
Somehow, I think Scripps will be more diligent in protecting the “platform” for the Venezuelans, than it would be for, oh say, Ben Shapiro.

Philip Sharp on identitarian favouritism in contemporary classical music:
There’s more.
Similar to the rapid devaluation of Venezuela’s currency to the extent that the government cannot afford to pay for money printing services, here in Central Florida we’ve had a commuter train service shoved down our throats at a cost of some $30 million a year (last I checked). Why can’t the system pay for itself you ask? Well because SunRail ticket revenue is less than ticketing expense. SunRail’s finances would be slightly stronger if riding was free.
http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/sunrail/os-sunrail-fares-lose-money-20170224-story.html
ticket revenue doesn’t even cover the cost of selling tickets.
Wait, what? That’s… wow.
I’ve just opened my new agency, the Venezuelan Speakers’ Agency, we’re offering talks at UK Universities, colleges and high schools, at reasonable rates. We guarantee to tell your students that Venezuela is a paradise, while the UK stinks.

They know we can hear what they say out loud, right?
Oh it’s been a comical disaster. The whole thing is a joke. The stupid trains are often smacking into cars at crossings (mostly because many of the crossings are not at right angles to the roads) and running over drunks and cyclists (admittedly, their fault but still). There’s a web site that tracks number of days since last SunRail accident. We’re currently at 35. And it’s not a complex train system. It’s one linear north-south run through three or four counties now. Possibly the most absurd part is it doesn’t even go to the airport.

And approved by a “Republican” “Tea Party” governor who is our only hope to rid us of one of Florida’s most annoying politicians. I cringe every time there’s a hurricane, not because of the storms which we all know how to deal with by now, but because at some point, ole dopey voice will come on the TV and explain to all of us dummies what wind is.
They know we can hear what they say out loud, right?
It does rather reveal whose interests are paramount.
it doesn’t even go to the airport.

I do think the whole ‘identify as’ nonsense will collapse under the weight of its own contradictions, when things like this happen more frequently – https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2018/apr/09/transgender-weightlifter-laurel-hubbards-eligibility-under-scrutiny
Once the first tranny mentalist (or cunning bastard) wins a women’s singles tournament or similar perhaps this will stop. Or women’s professional sport will.
I do think the whole ‘identify as’ nonsense will collapse under the weight of its own contradictions,
I’m just impressed you made it past the temperamental spam filter this time. What was it, face-paint? Magnets? A mystical amulet?

I’m going to go out on a limb here. Are the taxi drivers/companies substantial political contributors by any chance?

The jet setters can take their limos to the airport. The proles can stay home and reduce their carbon footprint. All as Gaia intended.

Occasionally I wander over to the Venezuela Analysis (Mark Weisbrot’s site) to see if they have any misgivings about their past views.
Nope. The catastrophe in Venezuela does not phase them in the least. Still resolutely socialist. These problems are, apparently, all caused by Trump.
Weisbrot is immune to facts, logic, or even basic decency. I used to view him with amusement. Now I see him as the face of unadulterated evil, the poster boy for those who would impose untold suffering for the sake of their political theories.
Scripps College is in California, so at least this Venezuela propaganda fest isn’t happening in the United States.
What?
Are the taxi drivers/companies substantial political contributors by any chance?
I wouldn’t be in a position to know, but given that the taxi guys lost their battle to keep out Uber and Lyft, my suspicions in that direction would more lie with the numerous park-and-rides now available in the area. Or maybe just the tax revenue the P&Rs generate. That’s just SWAG on my part. Most likely it’s just Hanlon’s Razor. Idiot government at work.
some 2 million collegians in the United States believe it can be okay to use violence to stop speech they don’t like.
To be fair I would too if I’d been repeatedly shown there are absolutely no consequences for doing so.

It would save countless others an awful lot of misery. And little of value would be lost.
The catastrophe in Venezuela does not phase them in the least. Still resolutely socialist. These problems are, apparently, all caused by Trump.
During the late Chavez period, before things had gone completely tits-up, though it was clear to anybody which way things were heading, I often wondered why the lefties didn’t blame the USA more for what was going wrong. After all, that’s always the standard lefty schtick – if something goes wrong in socialism it’s “because America”, obviously.
Then I realised that it was happening on Obama’s watch. Dreamboat Barack couldn’t possible be responsible for anything other than sweet perfection, so instead of plan-A (“because America”), the lefties were reduced to their usual plan-B to explain why socialism isn’t working (“because shutup”).
They must be so happy that Trump is now in power.
That animal needs putting down.

Having no religious subscription, I tend not to use the word soul; but after watching the video it occurred to me that, if souls exist, then the absence of one might look and sound like that.

The word that comes to mind is Voldemort.
“a new society rooted in political participation, communal economies and democracy.”
Leaving aside the fact that he doesn’t actually mean the last one, what kind of absolute arse hears that and thinks, “Oh, great! Count me in!”? A whole society based on “political participation”? That’s how I imagine the less salubrious districts of Hell.
“economics that serve people not profits.”
How does that work, then? If nobody profits, how are they served by it? Leftists make absolutely no sense.
“Moreover, 53% of students believe ‘promoting an inclusive society’ is a higher priority than protecting free speech rights.”
So excluding people from speaking is more important that including their ideas in debate. And that “promotes an inclusive society”. See what I mean? Absolute gibberish.
I do think the whole ‘identify as’ nonsense will collapse under the weight of its own contradictions, when things like this happen more frequently
I doubt it. Not when…
“I think our view is that it’s a little bit unfair given that she began weightlifting as a man and has that experience in weightlifting as a male, then to carry on as a woman we think is a little bit unfair and gives her an unfair advantage,” Keke said.
…they still can’t just say it: he’s not a woman, he’s a man, and men are biologically different from women.

Hah! A trifling annoyance compared to California Governor Jerry “Moonbeam” Brown’s glorious “Bullet Train to Nowhere”, which, as far as I know, has not had one mile of track laid, yet is millions of dollars over budget already. Not to worry, Richard Blum (CA Senator Diane Feinstein’s husband) has a major interest in the company receiving all these funds, so at least we know the money is going to the “correct” people.
(>_<)
Robert Stacy McCain on… well, see for yourself.
A trifling annoyance compared to California
Yeah, but when you live in The Land Of Fruits And Nuts such things are to be expected. Not that FL isn’t far behind insofar as the behavior of certain lower elements of its citizens are concerned. But generally not our politicians. At least not to that degree. But also, here’s the real kicker…When we saw a station being installed right outside our favorite Irish pub, we thought it would be convenient when going downtown for hockey games or a night on the town to park there and take the train in and out. Sure would cost about the same as parking but less hassle and O’doh has been under road construction downtown since forever it seems. So we look into doing so only to find out that the damn train doesn’t run on weekends or holidays.
Oh, and also, the stops are every 30 minutes so if you miss one you gotta wait another half hour for the next one….assuming IT is on time. Because there is also this caveat on their web site:
Because, yes. It’s a train. But what that is really saying is because the damn things are so unreliable time-wise, in a 30-minute block of time SUNRAIL are the ones who are not sure when it will arrive, +/- 20 minutes.
And they want 30 million of our tax dollars to support it because, as said, they actually lose money printing tickets.
And before things get too grand round here, a cautionary tale.
But Labour’s Chuka Umunna says the way to tackle knife gangs is to not use the word ‘gang’. 🙂

Call them “Dreamers” like the wondrously-sensitive Democratic Party does.
(“Dreamers” is the cheerful, media-adored nickname for DACA recipients – Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program to legalize illegal aliens brought to the US when they were minors. Unfortunately, the definition of who qualifies is absurdly broad in practice – including a large number of criminal gang members.)

That animal needs putting down.
With all due respect I don’t think you people listened to what he had to say. Sure, it was distressing and disgusting but the truth is often so. The gangster in the video is merely the manifestation of the unintended consequences of various other peoples’ choices and government policy. You can kill him and every one of his ilk only to see others (likely his “victims”) instantly fill the void.
Save some of your ire for your fellow citizens who support drug, prostitution, and gambling prohibition. Save some anger for the defenders of the welfare state – a state that encourages the most vile and shiftless people to continue a hedonistic, if bare, lifestyle unimpeded by real consequence. Keep a bit of hate back for the mothers the gangster mentions that are happy to feed their children to the underbelly so long as they can afford a mani/pedi.
You rightfully despise that gangster but he is not a rabid animal. He is a rational actor operating without compunction in the world we’ve created.
“He is a rational actor operating without compunction in the world we’ve created.”
If we’re going to view this solely through the lens of rationality, then we really need to kill him quickly. Only then should we move on to the factors that fostered the evil.
The event is “for all who are interested in economics that serve people not profits.”
In a country of starving people, that may be more accurate than they think.

Scruffy?
I thought the heko obi lent a raffish air.
“for all who are interested in economics that serve people not profits.”
Serve people? When leftists say that they want to serve people, I always think of that Twilight Zone episode “To Serve Man”: It’s a cookbook.
a state that encourages the most vile and shiftless people to continue a hedonistic, if bare, lifestyle unimpeded by real consequence.

I suppose that’s the thing. If you excuse dysfunction and encourage chronic parasitism, you’ll tend to get a lot of pathologically selfish people, swollen with a mix of entitlement and resentment, and to whom others are just foodstuff.
And inevitably, the shameless, those devoid of moral sense, will multiply.
The problem, of course, is how to help those in genuine need, and deserving, without rapidly creating monsters.
Meanwhile, in the world of “equality”, we find that all sports are “rigged” against wymxn.
RTWT, the author, apparently an expert in all things sports by dint of being manager of a co-ed softball team, thinks there need to be “sports” (involving wohupeoplekind skills like “investment strategies” [WTF]) designed just for wxmyn, so that there can be sports equality – or something.
And yes, it’s real.
