The petition was successful, and now Bibiana and Tindi are students in Ojai, California, where they are eager to catch up on their lost schooling and go on to college. There are no reports as of yet of the girls being stoned in Ojai.

Brandon’s tweet quickly went viral with 18,000 retweets, and the outrage machine kicked in, with Bustle, Slate, and numerous other sites denouncing [Bacon’s] post as a creepy and misogynistic call to sexual harassment and boundary violation. Revelist, a publication for millennial women, compared Dan Bacon to mass murderer Elliott Rodger, who killed six people (four of them men) in 2014 because he was mad about being rejected by women.

No idea, and I very rarely block people. In almost a decade of doing this I’ve only blocked five or six (which is, I think, pretty good going, all things considered). Maybe I fall below the outrage radar – not being on Twitter may be a factor there. And I shouldn’t think such people would be keen to search me out. Judging by the incoming traffic stats, this place is occasionally spotted, and presumably tutted at, by some of the people I’ve written about, or by their readers and associates. But the tutters and harrumphers rarely join in to tell me why I’m wrong, or why you lot should all be ashamed for being here. Perhaps they feel that attempting to scold me, or you, wouldn’t be a profitable use of their time. Hard to say.

Heh. I too have known the pain of encountering people who don’t (or can’t) read the social cues. On the other hand, it can be fun when people disregard social custom. A few months ago, I was in the cinema with The Other Half waiting for the film to begin and the young woman seated next to me leaned over and started up a conversation. She was impressed by the fact that I’d brought lens wipes to remove any fingerprints and nacho cheese residue from my IMAX 3D glasses, and appreciative of being offered one. Though as she was sitting next to her boyfriend, I’m pretty confident the conversation wasn’t a romantic overture.
I think my problem with most of this stuff is that it’s so structuralist. Every little incident in life has to be forced through the hoops of “women are victims, men are oppressors”. So even when the whiners have a point, as in this case with the headphones, it’s obnoxious because it’s marshalled to support the general narrative / myth that society is somehow hostile to women.
The problem is that the temptation is to oppose this rubbish by citing incidents of men experiencing difficulties and by downplaying any issues that women face. If you’re not careful, you end up replacing one silly generalisation (“women are oppressed”) with another even sillier one (“men are oppressed”). You then start defending the indefensible rather than doing what you should do, which is to try and judge each incident on its merits.
This is the thing about Trump, the MRAs etc. They’ve responded to identity politics by buying into its terms and overall philosophy, if not its conclusions. But the truth of the matter is that there’s no such thing as social justice, because justice is an individual concept.

I think it’s because this place is just too damned forensic for the overwhelming majority of SJWs.

This spring, Syracuse University will host an international conference with a theme, “The Place of Religion in Film,” that made one of its organizers think of Shimon Dotan.
The award-winning filmmaker, who sits on the faculty of New York University’s graduate school of journalism, recently finished a feature length documentary, The Settlers, that chronicles the history and present state of the religious settler movement in the West Bank, where more than 400,000 Israeli Jews live on occupied land . . .
The original invitation came from William L. Blizek, a professor of philosophy and religion at the University of Nebraska, where he founded the Journal of Religion & Film. “I sent a note to one of your producers to see if we could show The Settlers at the 2017 International Conference on Religion & Film in March of 2017,” he emailed. “Can you tell me if you have a distributor? Or, who should I contact about showing the film. We would like you to come with the film of course.” He later wrote that the conference “would pay your way from Israel to the States,” and then Blizek would fly him from Syracuse to Omaha for another screening.

It always exceeds design capacity because nobody knows what capacity to design for. Less headline-grabbing items, like building maintenance, are neglected because money must be constantly pumped into actual medical care. NHS facilities are, like government buildings everywhere, shiny and beautiful when new – nothing’s too good for “our” NHS, afer all – but rapidly descend into crumbling decay after about a decade or so. Minor repairs are neglected because they cost precious cash and the presentation of the Service is irrelevant: what choice do you have? If a restaurant looks a bit dirty and shabby, you’ll go to the one down the road. If your local hospital does, well, you should be grateful that it’s “free”.

As for albinos in Africa, I saw a documentary on it (not Independent Lens, the other one). Instead of dubbing the non-English speech, they used subtitles, so I could hear that their term for “albino” was derived from that very term, meaning that they picked it up from European colonizers, either to replace their native word (too long?) or because they didn’t have one. Or maybe the one they had was an epithet and they were being polite for the camera.
An island in Lake Victoria has been set aside as a refuge for albinos, literally to save their lives. This practice of using albino limbs for good-luck charms, to make the bearer horribly wealthy, is RECENT.

There was also a Google Chrome extension used by antisemites called the “Coincidence Detector” that automatically placed the triple parentheses around the names of those “involved in certain political movements and media empires” (almost exclusively Jewish or Jewish-sounding, natch). Google dropped the extension, but a similar “Nazi-detector” extension, increasing used to target anyone speaking out against radical Islam, or the obsequious behavior of Western governments towards its adherents, remains.
Update: when I checked a couple of weeks ago, the “Nazi Detector” was still available. It appears to be gone now.

I attended the third Lions Test in Sydney three years ago: seated to my left were my brother’s girlfriend, my brother, one of my cousins and said coz’s fiance; to my left, an little expat Welsh lass and her Aussie boyfriend. Come the second minute of the game when my fellow prop forward Alex Corbisero crashed over the try line, every Lions fan in the stadium leapt to their feet. My relatives turned to their respective other halves and hugged; all of a sudden I found myself with feminine arms around me as my Welsh neighbour, realising her Antipodean other half was remaining rooted to his seat, decided she needed a hug too. As the Lions ran in another three tries and sundry penalties, I got more hugged than I had anticipated and Aussie boyfriend remained somewhat dejected…
