Not Your Sort
A group of students at the Claremont Colleges in search of a roommate insist that the roommate not be white.
But of course. I mean, it is the twenty-first century.
Student Karé Ureña posted on Facebook that non-white students in need of housing arrangements should reach out to either her or two other students with whom she plans to live in an off-campus house. The post states that “POC [people of colour] only” will be considered for this living opportunity. “I don’t want to live with any white folks,” Ureña added.
[Student] Dalia Zada expressed concerns about the anti-white discrimination. “‘POC only?’ Maybe I’m missing something or misunderstanding your post, but how is that not a racist thing to say?” “This is directed to protect POC, not white people. Don’t see how this is racist at all…” responded AJ León, a member of the Pitzer Latino Student Union.
“People of colour are allowed to create safe POC only spaces. It is not reverse racism or discriminatory, it is self-preservation,” Sara Roschdi, another Pitzer Latino Student Union member, stated. “Reverse racism isn’t a thing.” “We don’t want to have to tiptoe around fragile white feelings in a space where we just want to relax and be comfortable,” commented Nina Lee, a Women’s Studies major. “I could live with white people, but I would be far more comfortable living with other POC.”
“White people always mad when they don’t feel included but at the end of the day y’all are damaging asf [sic] and if a POC feels they need to protect themselves from that toxic environment THEY CAN! Quick to try to jump on a POC but you won’t call your friends out when they’re being racist asf [sic],” noted Terriyonna Smith, an Africana Studies major and Resident Assistant for the 2016-2017 year. “I’m not responding to NO comments and NOPE I don’t wanna have a dialogue.”
Parents and alumni, please take note. This is what identity politics does to a child.
This is what identity politics does to a child.
Hmmm, really? Perhaps to some degree, yes. It seems to be a characteristic of identity politics to frame POC as a unified block in an antagonistic relationship with “wypipo”. But we should remember that different ethnic and racial groups self segregate in countries all over the world. It’s one of those things you’re not supposed to notice if you want to be a right-thinking person of pallor. I remember reading, perhaps 10 years ago now, a classified ad in the local paper advertising a room for rent around the university. “Asians only” it said, quite bluntly. It’s not common you see this language used so publicly, but that doesn’t mean these kinds decisions are being made all the time in private.
It’s like they want to introduce apartheid, only without all the “Whites Only” signs.
What makes me laugh is the number of these folk who go on about their colour who are paler than I, your typical mongrel Englishman, am — especially at this time of year.
What’s eye-widening isn’t just the smug racial antipathy, aired almost as a credential, or the eagerly regurgitated boilerplate in defence of smug racial antipathy, or the failure to grasp basic logic and the notion of reciprocation, or even the comments by other students denouncing the author for highlighting the exchange. It’s also the shocking grammar and spelling of Africana Studies majors.
“We don’t want to have to tiptoe around fragile white feelings in a space where we just want to relax and be comfortable,” commented Nina Lee, a Women’s Studies major.
Sounds like she’s the one with fragile feelings.
Are they campaigning for POC only water fountains and reserved seating on the bus.

I have a suspicion this lady would be disgusted.
Apologies, that isn’t a good vid for Rosa Parks but in essence I find it hard to believe she fought segregation in order for it to be reinforced via a different victimhood ideology.
“I don’t want to live with any white folks,”
Right back at ya sweetie.
That’s me, not some anonymouse called ‘J’….
I don’t want to live with any white folks
I suspect this is a bit like me saying I don’t want to sleep with any supermodels.
It frightens me to know that Africana Studies majors like this student will have all the power and authority in society when their education allows them to take on highly responsible jobs.
“Reverse racism isn’t a thing.”
In fairness, that’s true. Using the phrase implies acceptance of the claim that racism is something white people do to non-whites. What these little ninnies are doing is just old-fashioned racism – nothing ‘reverse’ about it.
One thing that fascinates me about Septic progs is their belief that their tendentious generalisations about the present situation in the USA represent eternal and worldwide truths that have just been discovered as part of a historically inevitable journey towards racial nirvana.
For example, cast an Irish actor in your film and you’ll get cries about “White People”. Cast someone who is very obviously of white Spanish descent, but just happens to come from South America and you get brownie points for casting a “Person of Color” (ugh).
A moment’s consideration would lead you to realise that Irish people have not historically been particularly privileged, while huge numbers of South Americans of Spanish origin are actually descended from imperial colonists. But Mexicans and Puerto Ricans are ‘oppressed’, so casting anyone who speaks Spanish as a first language constitutes ‘progress’.
It’s almost surreal. The stated motive is “self-preservation,” i.e., to “protect” a household of browner-skinned students from exposure to any random white person who might wish to move in and help pay the rent. Apparently, the browner-skinned students would be unable to “relax and be comfortable” while sharing a house with a white student, because white people are, and I quote, “damaging as fuck” and the mere presence of even one would constitute a “toxic environment.”
Given that colleges and universities are quick to police private communications on social media, we can assume that Claremont will get right on this to make sure its campus is a “safe space.”
“Look how far we’ve come!”
“We don’t want to have to tiptoe around fragile white feelings in a space where we just want to relax and be comfortable,” commented Nina Lee, a Women’s Studies major.
I wonder how often the people she deals with have to tiptoe around her feelings, in order to stave off rage, abuse and accusations of racism and sexism?
It’s also the shocking grammar and spelling of Africana Studies majors.
This may have been pointed out before, but using proper English s rayciss.
I note no examples of behaviors at Claremont ostensibly creating this “toxic environment” are provided. One is tempted to believe that the objections raised deal with the mere existence of non-POC rather than any concrete, you know, evidence of racial malfeasance.
“I’m not responding to NO comments and NOPE I don’t wanna have a dialogue.”
Terriyonna seems to have the self-absorbed princess thing DA-OWN!

Interesting that the voices are female. It seems that these young women are still playing the same games that girls play in the playground – invent and arbitrary group identity and enforce it to exclude others. Then you have the right to bully those others.
I’m not responding to NO comments
“ANY comments”. I suppose she could respond to no comments by inferring the intent behind the lack of commentary and responding to that.
Interesting that the voices are female.
I recently told a teenage niece that the neophyte “social justice” warriors now found in many schools remind me of the archetypal mean girls, the ones who pick on their classmates for having unfashionable shoes or the wrong kind of bag. There’s something quite similar about the dynamic.
If you don’t want to associate with whites, you are discriminating against them. Therefore you have no standing to insist that they not discriminate against you.
If you think you should be allowed to discriminate against them but they shouldn’t be allowed to discriminate against you, then you don’t believe in equality under the law. Therefore you have no standing to insist that they believe in it.
It’s so simple even a Studies Studies major could understand it.
It’s so simple even a Studies Studies major could understand it.
You give them far too much credit.
I nearly always peruse the reader comments at links that David posts, and most of the time I’m appalled at the ignorance I find. I was not disappointed.
The one that really got me was this:
Melissa Michelle Wray · Memphis, Tennessee
“This is directed to protect POC, not white people. Don’t see how this is racist at all…”
Hard to see anything when your head is so far up your own ass, you can’t smell your own shit.
It seems patently obvious to me that her (admittedly crude) comment was in response to the statement made by “AJ León (PZ ’18), a member of the Pitzer Latino Student Union” quoted in the article, but not so obvious to the scores of outraged readers responding to her, who somehow believe she’s agreeing with it.
[insert facepalm meme here]
Such a beautiful world the left is building for us all. Division, ignorance and hate everywhere.
I would say that the human flotsam showcased in the story has absolutely no business at university. But, of course, these days it does. These days the whole fucking place revolves around it.
Socialism! Dragging everyone and everything down to the same wretched level.
Well ain’t that just the darndest thing.
Because in a typical year in America, Pickers Of Cotton rape several thousand whites, and whites rape ~0 blacks.
Maybe one should reconsider who, exactly, it is that could have use of safe spaces for self-preservation?
(Numbers from the Bureau of Justice, whose figures for white-on-black rape and sexual assault combined year after year amount to “could not find any in sample, value is smaller than margin of error”.)
“I’m not responding to NO comments and NOPE I don’t wanna have a dialogue.”
And she’s a Resident Assistant to boot. It’s hilarious what college has come to. If I were a parent paying to send a kid here, I think my head would be exploding by now.
I note no examples of behaviors at Claremont ostensibly creating this “toxic environment” are provided.
Why, just twelve years ago the campus was shut down when a visiting professor’s car was vandalized with racist graffiti (by the prof herself who was convicted of insurance fraud in connection with the incident)
Numbers from the Bureau of Justice, whose figures for white-on-black rape and sexual assault combined year after year amount to “could not find any in sample, value is smaller than margin of error”.
Privilege much? The fact that there are no, or nearly no, white people raping black people is OBVIOSLY a confirmation of the racism endemic in the system.
…confirmation of the racism endemic in the system.
Or a confirmation of the racism endemic in Caucasians’ choice of individuals to victimize during a crime.
@dan, Aug 10, 11.54.
Can we hope that “Claremont Colleges” is not Ivy League?
@dan
majors like this student will have all the power and authority in society when their education allows them to take on highly responsible jobs
… such as shelf-stacking.
Can we hope that “Claremont Colleges” is not Ivy League ?
It is not – Ivy League is Dartmouth, Harvard, Yale, Brown, Cornell, Columbia, Princeton, and Pennsylvania, but all they are anymore is indistinguishable from a community college except for the snob factor. They are as full of moonbats as Claremont, and you’d get a better education at the University of Western East Pennsyltucky at South Overshoe.
… such as shelf-stacking.
Would that it were so. In our more and more fucked-up republic she is as likely to have a government job, say, like the ineffable Marilyn Mosby, state’s attorney for Baltimore, MD.
white people are, and I quote, “damaging as fuck” and the mere presence of even one would constitute a “toxic environment.”
It’s the maddening tendency of white people to:
(a) not be monsters, even to the point of being endearing.
(b) not be DOWN WIT DA COZ.
(c) listen to White Music.
(d) not accept blame for All The World’s Ills.
OTOH, if the white people one finds in colleges answer to this description, the POCs have an entirely valid point.
“We don’t want to have to tiptoe around fragile white feelings in a space where we just want to relax and be comfortable,”
Not enough irony in her diet. This culture has embraced conditioning that has left them mentally ill.
Either we stop them our e submit to their madness.
